Massdee, I would definitely say that Napolitano will make a run for it again, especially is Matewsky is looking to move up. He can't run for two seats at once anymore, so his seat will be open if he goes for At Large.
JayCee . . . some of these folks take "mental" to a whole new level . . . |

As far as the Ward 1 crew as you so put it goes, i think we have a pretty good crew if you ask me you can all say what you want about Wayne but he has always been an effective Councilman and always returns calls. Also of all the first term Councilors that were elected in 2005, Mike Mangan has been the most vocal, dosent just sit there and take up space like some of them and does his homework and always gives an honest response. And don't forget that Mike Mangan is also a shill for the school committee. He proposed that they get paid for being Fred's rubber stamp. |

First of all, I would like to thank Mr Dobbins for his nice words. And to Court, the reason I submitted this proposal along with The Mayor, Alderman, & Council was to look at the salaries of all these positions. I have talked with many respected individuals in this community in private, who have expressed an interest in the Mayor's seat. It has been said to me more than once that the $85,000 salary is to low. Melrose pays their Mayor $98,000. Every other community in this area is over $100,000. I believed by trying to raise the Mayor's salary, that we may get a bunch of individuals who might want to take a shot at running for it. As far as the School Committee goes, I believe that a salary attached to this position would also bring out more candidates. If these salaries were approved, they would take place in 2008. I have no idea who will be in office then. To massdee, I have been very supportive of the Mayor in most cases. I was one of many last year who signed my name to Alderman McGonagle's petition in opposition to the power plant. It was wrong for Everett, and that is why I signed my name to it. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email whenever you like.

Mike--If the School Committee members get paid, doesn't that automatically mean they are eligible to take Health Insurance through the City of Everett ?
I believe the State Law is that all ELECTED officials that are PAID are eligible for health insurance.
Could you check on that ?
That would make a difference to me on this subject. |

That's correct, SS. It is mandated by state law that any paid elected official be offered health insurance benefits through the city. |

And where exactly is the money going to come from to give out a pay raise to the Mayor ( no mater who is mayor) or to start paying the School Committee? Haven't the taxpayer taken a big enough hit. If you think about it, and have to add in Health Insurance, and after 10 years in office a pension, exactly how much will it be costing "US" to pay the School Committee. Our elected officials should be looking for ways to be decreasing the budget not increasing it. Furthermore, with the Ed Reform Act the School Committee has a lot less power than they did. So, are we going to start paying them to do less. City Hall better start thinking about "US" the voters or none of them are going to be in office for very long. Enough is really enough. |

SolidSnake you are correct. I respect your opinion, and understand why you might not want this. As to massdee, when you say what a crew in Ward 1, what do you mean by that? My experience with Ald Nuzzo, Counliors Cardello & Matewsky the fourteen months that I have been in office have been just great. Working with them, I have found each of them to be very committed and very professional. Whether you agree with me or not, I am always there to take the vote. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

Mr Mangan,
Ald. Nuzzo does not and never has returned phone calls. I won't even go there with Mr. Matewski, I believe his heart is in the right place but......... Ms. Cardello I really have no beef with. Mr. Mangan, it appears to me that you just go along with most everything that comes before you, and for the life of me, I will never understand you bringing up pay increases and paying the school committee.
I've been doing a little research since your original post.
Population of our surrounding Communities: As of 2007 Chelsea..........35,080 Everett..........37,179 (which by the way is a slight drop) Malden...........55,382 Medford..........54,235 Melrose..........26,547 (a much more affluent community than Everett) Revere...........46,491 I have been unable to find the mayor's salaries online, thus far. If their mayors are paid more than Everett, in most cases their population is larger, thus the tax burden is not as much on each taxpayer. So, back to one of my original questions, where do you get the money for these increases in our budget?

I also found this on the City of Malden's web site:
City of Malden Adopts a Residential Tax Exemption By: Mayor Office 2/6/2007
WHAT IS THE RESIDENTIAL EXEMPTION?
The City of Malden has adopted the Residential Exemption which is intended to lessen the tax burden on eligible homeowners. The Residential Exemption establishes a “graduated” tax, reducing the taxes of lower valued properties while increasing the taxes of higher valued properties and non-owner occupied residential properties. The Residential Exemption is a tax-shifting option that municipalities in Massachusetts must vote on every year during the annual classification hearing.
Who is eligible?
Only taxpayers owning AND occupying a residential property as of January 1st of 2007 in Malden AND using this property as their principal residence when filing state and federal tax returns. If the property is held in a trust, the occupying owner must be both a trustee and beneficiary.
How much will I receive and How does it work?
If eligible, your taxes would be based on your property assessment, reduced by as much as 5% of the average assessed value of all residential properties in the city. Every eligible taxpayer will receive a flat dollar amount off their tax bill. The flat dollar amount is based upon the Average Residential Value times the exemption amount times the new adjusted tax rate.
Will this affect my Statutory exemption?
No. Statutory exemptions such as Widow’s, Veterans, Legally Blind, Elderly (70 and over), and others will not be affected. You will continue to receive your full exemption. Please note: Massachusetts General Laws require that a taxpayer cannot pay less then 10% of the full tax due. If a taxpayer receives both a Statutory and Residential Exemption, and amount due is less then 10%, the City will adjust the amount of the Residential Exemption.
This serves as a summary, and will not answer every question. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Malden Assessors Office at (781) 397-7100. |

Malden - one step ahead and Everett takes two steps back. Thank you, Mayor Hanlon!
Mr. Mangan- while I appreciate what you're trying to say about paying the school committee, you'd have more success if you tied "getting paid" with reforms - like making sure that none of them have family and friends working for the school department. Right now, these people aren't worth a plug nickel to the taxpayers. |
