Wouldn't it make more sense if city hall worked with the Chamber of Commerce to see if some program could be set up with local businesses to hire the kids for summer jobs. That way it wouldn't be costing the taxpayers anything more. |

I agree that that the parks department by itself should be keeping the parks clean (It'll be interesting to see the discussion on item #29 tonight)...I was just trying to point out one of the few tangible ways that we as tax payers can judge any bang we are getting for the buck.
Personally, I would rather see the program eliminated because I don't believe that it can be run in a non-political fashion. |

I think they tried to do it with the cooperation of the Chamber one year but the Chamber wasn't comfortable with giving local businesses a mandate to provide jobs.
Whatever happened to finding a job for yourself instead of expecting one to be handed to you? |

I heard Mr Kelley say that the night res. parking people have written over nine thousand tickets. The kids starting acting up, of course, so I didn't hear how many of these tickets have been paid. Did he say? I'm sure they have not all been paid. |

He said he couldn't separate the tickets they wrote that were paid from the ones the police write. But, he did say since the first of the year over 200 thousand (I don't remember the exact figure) has been paid for tickets written for resident parking.
There was also something about how many cars Sgt Bova has had towed. He said $20,000.00 of what was collected in May was because of the towed cars.
That office brings in a lot of money........... |

Hanlon hasn't found a thing that he doesn't like to spend our money on, yet the other elected officials let him get away with it. |

I do not believe that these 100 kids all have some kind of pull for these jobs. I think the program is great and that it is keeping the kids off the streets, hanging out, and putting some cash in their pockets so that when they are not working they can do things like go to the mall, movies, out to lunch, something other than just hanging around and getting into trouble. I applaud this program and think it is worth every dime that goes into it. |

As political as this city is, I don't know why it would surprise you. Obviously, we disagree on this particular item. I don't think my tax dollars should be paying these kids for doing almost nothing. The money is better spent elsewhere. |

I know of at least half a dozen kids that have absolutely NO Political pull in this city and they worked the City Summer jobs last summer. |

I do not know any kids who worked there that were in danger of being in any trouble at all. One of them I know slept the entire day because the department he worked for had nothing for him to do. I know the kids who worked for Bob Shea at the high school were busy. He had plenty of things for them to do . It is definitely political. It is who you know and your application is pulled out of the pile. I know this for a fact.

The kids I am referring to worked the 3 week program cleaning the parks. At the end of the three weeks new kids did three weeks and so on. I know for a fact that these kids had NO pull whatsoever. |
