Do I know for certain that every kid who gets one of these summer jobs is politically connected? Since I'm not politically connected, there is obviously no way I could be sure of this.
However, what I am reasonably certain of is that any kid who is politically connected that wants one of these jobs will get one ahead of anyone else. They probably also get the better selection of these jobs, leaving the scraps for those kids that could really use them.
And it not just the adminstration (past or present) using these jobs for political payback. If you notice, someone on the city council always asks who's doing the hiring for this program so that they know who to go to get their share of the jobs. |

Bob Shea is a great guy. He is still working because he has done nothing wrong. I think you may have confused two men. One of them left the high school.

No, Sally . . . there's no confusion. I wouldn't want my kid working for him -- or within ten feet of him -- either. But I also think we've gone as far as we can go with this part of the conversation in a public format. |

So why are we wasting our money on these kids? |

Maybe it would'nt be such a waste if they ran it properly. You can see the good it could do in keeping kids occupied and working instead of just hanging around all summer waiting to get into some kind of trouble. Unfortunately the people in charge can't be counted on to make sure there is some bang for the buck out of this program. What a pity. The kids will be the losers if the program is cancelled. |

Middle-Man 1 you are correct it will be the kids that lose out if this program was ever to be stopped. I don't feel it is a waste of money AT ALL. I have to ask if the ones who say it is have any school aged children? I think it is a great program and gives the kids something to look forward to and strive do a good job at. |

I don't have a problem with this program, I just think with the budget the way it is, it is a place for them to look to help trim it down. When we can afford it better, bring it back. When my kids were in High School they went out and found their own part time jobs. They worked at Diary Maid, local sub shops, Stop & Shop and Sports World up the Square. Now, there is even more opportunity for them with the addition of the Gateway Mall and Best Buy. I think with a little "old fashion" ingenuity these kids can find work without the city providing it. |

Yes, massdee, my kids did the same. They worked part-time jobs, that they found themselves, and they were required to do something besides just show up!
There are plenty of job opportunities out there that won't cost me anything. I really don't want to be putting money in your child's pocket Sally. I'm having enough trouble keeping my head above water and since this program ultimately increases my taxes, I would like to see it eliminated. |

Another thought, that 80K, which I really think should be cut, could provide 2 full time positions to people with families to support. |

My child has a job already and will be working for the city. Do I think it is right, no, but I cannot blame him for wanting to make some extra money and work lots of hours this summer. I am not politically connected. My son is a likeable kid who has a few ins with people.

I am sorry but, I disagree with you about the kids finding thier own part time jobs. I have been out there with my son and what we have found is a bunch of non-speaking english people trying to figure out what it is he wants to fill out. Want to cut some revenue around here... cut down on all of the "new" hires that we have done fine without before Mr Hanlon came along. |
