I also agree with cutting out a lot of the new hires. These are tough times we are living in and some not so nice cuts need to be made. Cutting the kids summer jobs will not hurt City Services and will save the taxpayers. Just as I am sure there are other places to look to cut. They need to make cuts that will not impact the overall good of the city, and I'm sorry, but I feel the kids work program fits into that category. |

So you would rather have these kids hanging around with nothing to do except get into trouble out of boredom? I think we need to employee these kids so they can earn some cash than be able to do things, again, like go to the show, mall, lunch, and so on...
Also massdee I have been looking long and hard and havn't found any overall good in this city. |

I firmly believe that these jobs should NOT be taken away from these kids. Some of these kids it is their ONLY source of income. In order to keep them busy and free from crime I think we need to employ them and I agree that when they are not working they will be out and about enjoying the money in which they have proudly earned. |

Yes, cutting some of the newly created positions along with eliminating this program is a good idea.
I hope they're able to cut the budget some when the hearings start. I'm sure there's plenty of room for cuts. Let's hope they do it for us and not for themselves in hopes of being elected to another term. |

I'm sorry to sound harsh, but when did it become the government's responsibility to keep kids out of trouble? When did it become the government's responsibility to provide jobs for these kids?
I don't have a problem with the program, but I do believe it's a political game. How many applications does the city receive and how do they determine who gets the jobs? Are these jobs "needs based"?

I still feel there are plenty of positions in the business community and the kids could find summer jobs that way and be off the streets and out of trouble. From what I have read here these kids only get three weeks of work and then they are swapped out for new kids. So, what are they doing the rest of the summer? |

That is true it is a 3 week job for each kid so that it gives 100 different kids jobs. In that 3 weeks they make approximately $180.00 per week so about $540.00 in the time given which allows them more than enough money to go out and have some good clean fun. |

How many hour a week are they working? I can't figure out your numbers. 100 kids at $540.00 each in only $54K. What are they making per hour? |

I am pretty sure it is $7.50 hourly (minimum wage went up the first of year I think) and that they work approximately 25 hours per week. |

Well to the best of my knowledge they are able to employee 100 kids out of all the applications they get and that is giving them jobs at 3 week interval's. The kids get minimum wage which again I believe is $7.50 hourly. Where the Mayor comes up with his numbers only JV knows. |

I'd still like to know how they determine which kids get these job. Is it first come first serve? Merit? Needs based? If it's not political, it has to be something else.

I am pretty sure it is a first come first serve. I am sure there are some politics thrown in as with everything else around here but, not all are politically connected that is for sure. |

I believe that the plan is to hire some older kids in a "team leader/supervisor" position. I would assume that they will be paid a bit more. So that would be part of the math not working out.
The rest of it is probably due to the same Hanlon/Vetrano "math" that caused them to still ask for $60K to complete the forsenic audit after they already has a signed contract with Melanson & Heath for $45K! |

I can see the results now for the mayor's race. Hanlon 202 McGongale over the 2 thousand mark. Hanlon's days are numbered |
