Yes, their church services are quite different from ours and a lot louder! It seems to be more like a party, wouldn't you say? |

Yes, not that I mind that. At night they should not be able to have services that late as far as I am concerned. It is not fair to the surrounding residents. And it is several nights a week. I used to go to a church with live music. They only had a night service on Friday nights and it was over by 9:30 out of respect for the neighbors.

Middleman I want to see you try to drive down or up webster st it's impossible. this street needs either to be a one way or one sided parking and it will never happen, god forbid you should upset the apple cart at city hall. Solving problems in this city is a chore when problems are so easy to solve. This city sucks get out why you can. And if the new mayor coming in thinks he can resolve problems it will never happen everyone is spoiled in this city and no one has any balls to do anything about any issue in this city. I said my peace you all have a good day |

Middleman, you didn't answer whether you actually live in Everett. The difference between your opinion and my opinion about Webster St is that I actually know what is going on there and you apparently do not. As far as I'm concearned if you don't know what you are talking about, you should listen to the people who are affected by the problem and learn what is actually going on. You characterize people's legitimate complaint's as trivial without experiencing it yourself. As I stated earlier, provide me with your address and I'll bring some people to hang around your house and recreate what the people on Webster are subjected to. Then see what you have to say. |

Middleman - you're making an erroneous assumption. You're assuming because there is gridlock at certain times, that there is gridlock at all times....and that's not the case with Webster Street. When people are frustrated with Broadway (at any time)- Webster is a convenient cutthrough between Broadway and Linden....and cars can found hurling down Webster. I've been nearly clocked over there a few times myself. Try making the right onto Webster from Church...you say your prayers beforehand.
The point is, Middleman - that makemelaugh raised an issue he believes to be legitimate. I don't think it's unreasonable to let him have his say, and I don't like casting judgements or aspersions on it. That's all I'm saying. |

makemelaugh, you do just that. Webster street was changed to a one way for a period of time and apparently it did'nt work out to the liking of the politicians or residents there because it was changed back. Speeding ? On a Dead End Street?(Ellsworth Street) I doubt it makemelaugh. And if it's so tight going down Webster Sreet with two sided parking then how on earth could you speed there? Whats wrong with this city is too many people complaining all the time about things such as this that are pure foolishness. There are legitimate issues to be discussed. This is not one.
I understand that it was made a one way way back when, when we didn't have wider trucks and bigger cars. But, I think it's time to re-visit the one sided parking don't you. And what are the legitimate issues: police don't want to enforce anything and that's my fault casue they are too busy catching our criminals on the street. Let's face it they hands are tied it's time to have the meters 24 hours and shut down the city hall parking lot on the weekends and if I remember correctly Hanlon made that point at the last meeting they had with the church. So go attack me all you want I am standing up for my beliefs. |

On the subject of Sgt. Bova.... He once told an elderly friend of mine that maybe she should "run" across Broadway, near city hall, because the walk light isn't long enough to make it across by walking. I, too, wonder what happened to Sgt. Strong, I spoke with him many times in relation to the noise around the Walgreens parking lot, the street sweeping in the middle of the night, the buses running for 1/2 an hour or more. When I spoke with Sgt. Bova, he basically said there's nothing much he can do. He is useless. |

Court, once again you are correct. I may have been a little hasty. Just because there is gridlock during most of the day does'nt mean that there is all the time. Your analysis is a rock on this board. Point taken. I did a little calling around today and found out through one of our local politicians that Webster Street was changed back to a two way after a trial period due to complaints from city hall employees and RESIDENTS OF LAROVERE'S BUILDING because they were to lazy to drive around the block to get into their parking garage. Now I'm not always right about everything. I'm the first to admit that. I seem to be in the minority on this issue. So be it. A source of mine tells me the police will be monitoring the area with sound decibel meters to find out once and for all if there is a noise problem over the legal limit that they can do something about. If there is, well, I'll be wrong. If there is not something tells me that makemelaugh and Donice will not admit they were wrong. They'll probably just say the cops don't know how to operate the machine correctly. This will be my last post on this issue until it is resolved on way or the other. I don't want to be a punching bag just because I have an opinion contrary to some others. |

On another subject, may I suggest EPDTRAFFIC1@yahoo as a contact for the traffic department. Messages always get to where they should this way. The post ragarding an elderly person being told to "run" across Broadway is nothing short of slander. It's very simple to anonymously slam someone with an unsubstantiated rumor here. I know quite a few at EPD and find this type of thing insulting. I don't believe it for one second. |

They don't need a decibel meter to enforce this law all they need are ears. If you can hear a car inside your house with the windows closed it is an unreasonable noise. There is no end to what length this police dept. will go to find excuses for not doing their job.
Chapter 90: Section 16. Offensive or illegal operation of motor vehicles
Section 16. No person shall operate a motor vehicle, nor shall any owner of such vehicle permit it to be operated, in or over any way, public or private, whether laid out under authority of law or otherwise, which motor vehicles are prohibited from using, provided notice of such prohibition is conspicuously posted at the entrance to such way. No person shall operate a motor vehicle, nor shall any owner of such vehicle permit it to be operated upon any way, except fire department and fire patrol apparatus, unless such motor vehicle is equipped with a muffler to prevent excessive or unnecessary noise, which muffler is in good working order and in constant operation, and complies with such minimum standards for construction and performance as the registrar may prescribe. No person shall use a muffler cut-out or by-pass. No person shall operate a motor vehicle on any way which motor vehicle is equipped (1) with a muffler from which the baffle plates, screens or other original internal parts have been removed and not replaced; or (2) with an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust. No person operating a motor vehicle shall sound a bell, horn or other device, nor in any manner operate such motor vehicle so as to make a harsh, objectionable or unreasonable noise, nor permit to escape from such vehicle smoke or pollutants in such amounts or at such levels as may violate motor vehicle air pollution control regulations adopted under the provisions of chapter one hundred and eleven. No siren shall be mounted upon any motor vehicle except fire apparatus, ambulances, vehicles used in official line of duty by any member of the police or fire fighting forces of the commonwealth or any agency or political subdivision thereof, and vehicles owned by call fire fighters or by persons with police powers and operated in official line of duty, unless authorized by the registrar. No person shall use on or in connection with any motor vehicle a spot light, so called, the rays from which shine more than two feet above the road at a distance of thirty feet from the vehicle, except that such a spot light may be used for the purpose of reading signs, and as an auxiliary light in cases of necessity when the other lights required by law fail to operate.
No person, except a duly authorized person driving an emergency fire vehicle, shall operate a motor vehicle equipped with metal studded tires upon a public way between May the first and November the first; provided, however, the registrar may authorize the use of such tires before November the first, if weather conditions require the use thereof. Whoever violates the provisions of this paragraph shall be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars.

Apparently there is standard timing on pedestrian lights and it is generally too short for many people to make it across the street. We frequently joke that the Walk should say Run. Perhaps Sgt Bova was doing the same thing? I'm sure that's a complaint he hears frequently that he can't do anything about.
As I understand it, Sgt Strong requested the change & is very happy in his new position. |

I kind of expected that type of answer from you. What, are you afraid the decibel meter readings will not produce a number sufficient to take action? In which case you would be proved wrong. I think taking the time to monitor the noise levels is doing their job. It would be so easy to just " use your ears" as you suggest. Unfortunately the police need EVIDENCE to take action against people in the USA. You have the luxury of disliking whomever you choose and branding them a nuisance. The cops are forced to abide by case law, meaning previous court decisions, before they act. You'd be just the type to jump all over them if the A.C.L.U. filed a suit against the city and the department for harrassing a minority group without the evidence to back their case and Everett was forced to pay a settlement. Anyone else have a problem with the statement that using a decibel meter is trying find an excuse for not doing their job ? Or am I alone on an island here? I know I said I would'nt respond anymore previously but this irks me too much. |

You're a bit touchy here MM. My guess would be the complaints are hitting a little too close to home...........
The real issue is there's a problem on Webster that is not being properly addressed or acknowledged. Perhaps it's been ignored for so long because it's not drugs or gangs but whatever the reason, it's past time that something is done. We all realize the police have many things that need their attention however; at some point in time items have to be moved from the back burner to the front. If they need a decibel meter, then use one. BUT, use it at the times the resident have indicated the problem exists and use it discretely! We all slow down and obey the law when we see a police car, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t speeding. I can guarantee when the church members know they’re being watched or monitored, they’re all on their best behavior!

Charm & justme, you make rational points. Timing is important when you are trying to solve a problem. I just could'nt see why using a meter is deemed "finding an excuse for not doing their job". This is an irrational statement where you two make a point without being over the top about it. I have friends who work there. And yes I guess I am a little over sensitive about it. I would apologize to Donice & makemelaugh if their point is proven to be correct. As I said before, I've been wrong before and will be wrong again I'm sure. Perhaps they could get their point across without the cheap shots also? |
