hmm maybe I am kind of cynical because of the last administration and how they handled building schools, but I am willing to bet that this new high school will have significant problems with it as time goes on after it is opened.... |

Can't say I blame you for your reluctance's on the issue however, lets hope that they got it right the first time with the High School. |

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done before school opens for the year. I hope that that city government reviews the punch list before accepting it....because THAT can come back and bite them in the a**. The superintendent is known for his sharp teeth and for biting the hand that feeds him. |

Independent 8/22/07 The new school year in Everett is less than a week away--welcome news for most parents, but that’s another story—and, as expected, the big news revolves around the new high school opening. It has been a long time coming for the school kids in Everett to have a home they can be proud of, and that time is now. With city government taking over the building and handing that control over to the School Committee, the last step now in what has been a long process is for the School Committee to accept that control just in time for kids to arrive for their first day. We all must understand that although the school is now in the city’s hands, there is still some work left on that building; however, what remains is small enough that it shouldn’t affect the ability of administrators and teachers to operate and for the kids to learn in a safe environment. We are all looking forward to next week, when Everett schools will officially enter the 21st century and provide their children with the best possible environment for learning. |

I was speaking to an Everett teacher yesterday who told me the new high school is a magnificent building. This teacher's only concern was the amount of work that still has to be completed. I guess there is more to be done than what we have been lead to believe. |

I also heard that it isn't large enough to accommodate the amount of kids attending. |

That classroom building on the left is obviously not large enough. |

I find it troubling, if true, that the new EHS does not have the space for all the students. Could some of this problem be due to the illegal immigrant population here in Everett? Notice, I said illegal. If that is the case, then it is extremely unfair to all the legal students that attend our schools. This causes an extra burden on our teachers and increases classroom sizes, which is not the ideal way to educate our students. |

BINGO massdee. Did you look at the stats for Everett? They are comical. There are so many kids that are NOT legal so in turn NOT documented so OUR children loose out on their education. Something is seriously wrong here. I stated in one of the posts that I received the forms from my sons elementary school to fill out and it stated and I quote "SS# if you have one" Uh What? |

It also has to do with losing the voke space which they planned to convert into classrooms. When the state got wind that the voke was not going to be in the high school they made them take away that square footage. ANd the immigrant population, illegal and legal has grown so much over the past couple of years, it has to affect things.

Sally, are you saying, we have a new high school with more students and less space than the old EHS? |

Basically that is exactly what she is saying. Sally the legal immigrants are accounted for it is the illegals that are not on record so that allowances could be made in the building for the extra bodies. And as much as I hate to admit it we have to make room from the football players who live in different cities BUT are productive here in Everett. |

Yes, Massdee, the square footage is less than the old high school. But the classrooms in the new high school are much smaller than the old high school. They lost the vocational space. Originally that space was figured into the plans.
