Tetris, you have certainly earned the right to be biased in this race. I think Mayor Hanlon suprised many, many people, given his longevity with city government in both an elected capacity and as city clerk. Who ever would have thought his administration would be as self-serving and incompetent as it's been?

Regarding the newsflash, I wonder if the CC was afforded the opportunity to review materials or if they're just expected to show up?

I arrived home at 6:15 and the meeting was already adjourned. Did anything "good" happen?

Sorry this took so long; just as I was getting ready to post this, my internet connection "died". Better late than never.

Just watched the tape. The transfer of $4 million to the tax levy passed 11-0 with no debate; reconsideration failed 0-11. The only other business that they addressed was fixing the problem with the $100,000 transfer to the after school program; both of those votes also passed 11-0. The meeting was over in 10 minutes.

Thanks, did you happen to notice if the mayor was in the audience or not?

Just fast forwarded thru the entire meeting again; believe, it or not there was not one good shot of the audience. The only parts of it that you could see were the corners of the front row on either side of the chamber. Got the feeling that no one was there though.

I'd join in but I'm trying to take the rest of the day off.

Tails, the mayor hasn't shown up for a number of important meetings during his tenure. Why would this one be any different? So, are you positive he was there or are you guessing?

Even if he were there, why would anyone bother to call him up? He has never provided an answer to anything and, in this instance, he'd be patting himself on the back over something he had no clue was going to happen! We all know 11.6 million in free cash wasn't intentional. Someone didn't know what they were doing. Is anyone surprised?

My view regarding free cash is that you don't get to pat yourself on the back unless you've cut the budget to create it. If you have substantial free cash, it means that "unanticipated revenue" and overtaxing the citizens created it.

I agree that the Mayor has in the past either not been there or was watching from his office. I was told he absolutely was there in the chambers and in his office. There have been plenty of times in the past when the Mayor raised his hand and the Alderman ignored him. I understand them upset but they should give the man a chance to explain. He did not leave City Hall that night until the meeting was over.

I’m not giving him any credit, but I feel he could have explained it better than Larry DeCoste. When Larry was not answering Stephen Smith’s questions, Stat should have either called the Mayor up or the solicitor. The part I found a little funny (and I may be grasping at straws) is ECTV almost always shows the audience but kept everything really close up on the Alderman. It could have been because Carlo and Joe are running for Mayor (who knows) but that was something I noticed.

On another matter, do have an opinion on the shopping cart issue with Alderman Nuzzo? I understand what he’s saying but Stop & Shop donates a lot to the community and is terrific revenue for the City. I would hate to step on their toes too much. They are willing to go from two day a week pickup to seven. Also, they might have a contract with this company. I think if someone sees children playing with a shopping cart, maybe the police should be called. Just my thought…

On the shopping cart issue, I agree with you, Tails, on this one. Was it really necessary to have the store manager up to the meeting? Couldn't a phone call or letter sufficed? I, too, don't like seeing the carts around but why not give S&S the chance with the seven day program before trying to force them into something they don't wish to implement at this time. If the seven day pick up doesn't work, then revisit it and ask them to put the devices on their carts.

I seriously doubt either the mayor or city solicitor could have provided a better explanation of the situation. The city solicitor talks in circles and never makes sense. Listening to him is confusing even when you know the answer! The mayor has no idea how this situation occurred. All he knows for sure is now that it’s there; he wants to spend it………………….

I agree on the shopping cart thing. Nuzzo isn't even giving the seven day pick up a chance. He wants what he wants and apparently isn't willing to bend at all. It's reasonable to at least give it a chance.

One question I have is what is the Alderman going to do if Stop & Shop refuses to do what he wants them to? Pass another unenforceable ordinance? Organize a boycott? Shut them down? (Where would poor Stat shop then?) If the city wants to attract new business, I think that we need to an image of a city that is willing to work with business, at least on non-critical issues.

I agree we need to stop grandstanding and just amke a phone call sometimes. Nuzzo should know what Joe Maganaro does for this city. He allows all of the kids to can at his stores and set up tables for bake sales, candy sales etc. He donates so much to this community. We should be so lucky to have all the businesses in Everett contributing like Joe Maganaro. Nuzzo never says a word until some stupid thing bothers him. Seriously, if a kid is playing in a shopping cart that is the parents problem. I never see carts around the city. Am I the only one?
