Two people are dead in Everett after an apparent murder-suicide, according to Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr.'s office.
Police responded to 21 Russell St. at 12:30 a.m. Thursday and found a woman and a man dead of gunshot wounds, and a second man seriously injured, officials said.
Officials said the gunman, Edward Pettengill, 44, of East Boston, shot the lock off of Tina Moric's apartment door and opened fire. Before Moric, 36, was fatally shot, she yelled to her 11-year-old daughter to get out of the house. A man inside the apartment was shot in the arm, but managed to escape. The shooter then turned the gun on himself.
The injured man was rushed to a Boston hospital in serious condition with multiple gunshot wounds. The 11-year-old girl was not injured.
Police said they believe Pettengill was the Moric's ex-boyfriend and the injured man was her current boyfriend. Neighbors said Moric was a manager for the Windham Hotel's restaurant and bar in Chelsea. |

Everett Mom struggled with gunman, died after saving daughter, 11 Email|Print| Text size – + December 20, 2007 03:23 PM
By John R. Ellement and Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff
EVERETT -- A scorned lover burst into the apartment of his former girlfriend with a shotgun early this morning and opened fire in an apparent murder-suicide that left two dead and one man wounded, according to prosecutors and neighbors.
The gunman, identified by authorities as Edward H. Pettengill, 44, walked up the back stairs of a second-floor apartment on Russell Street at about 12:30 a.m. and blasted his way through the door, according to prosecutors and neighbors. The victim's 11-year-old daughter was inside the home when the shooting began, but she escaped before her mother, Altijana "Tina" Moric, was killed, according to Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr.
Moric, 36, struggled with Pettengill and screamed for her daughter to run.
“Tina fought for herself and fought for her 11-year-old daughter,” Leone said at a press conference this afternoon at the Everett Police Department.
Neighbors described a harrowing scene, recounting how they heard the struggle and the blasts of the shotgun.
"It was awful. It was really, really terrible," said Ruth Giannasoli, who lives in the apartment downstairs. "At least nothing happened to the little girl."
The shooting started just before 12:30 a.m. when Pettengill forced his way in the back door, Leone said. Moric's new boyfriend, Joseph E. Scimeni, 46, heard the noise and went to investigate. Pettengill shot Scimeni in the arm and went after Moric, Leone said.
Scimeni stumbled outside and called police at 12:32 a.m. Moric fought with Pettengill and helped her daughter escape. While the struggle continued inside, police arrived with tactical equipment and prepared to force their way into the apartment, said Chief Steven Mazzie of the Everett Police Department. They tried unsuccessfully to communicate with Pettengill.
With police outside, Pettengill shot and killed Moric and then turned the gun on himself, authorities said. Officers waited another nine minutes before forcing their way inside.
Mazzie said the strategy was to use time as an ally and try to negotiate a peaceful end. Police training has taught officers not to storm a home where hostages are being held at gunpoint, especially a woman and a child, he said. From the first 911 call until Pettengill killed himself, 23 minutes elapsed, authorities said.
Moric and Pettengill had dated for 3 1/2 years before they broke up in August, shortly before she moved from East Boston to Everett. Neighbor Elena Aresco said Moric had recently told her that Pettengill was "unstable" and did not get along with her daughter.
"I think that’s why they ended things, because [her daughter] came first in her life," Aresco said.

The herald is reporting that a 47 yo man died in a stabbing, not a shooting...at 20 Lewis Street. Doesn't Wayne live on that street? I saw him campaigning on Main St this morning....not sure that was the right thing to do when your neighbor/constituent was stabbed to death a few hours earlier. |

BOSTON -- Everett police are investigating an overnight shooting that left one man dead inside his mother's home.
Officials said the man was found shot to death in his mother's house on Lewis Street.
The victim lived there with his mother.
Police are not confirming whether the shooting was random or a targeted attack.
channel five news so it's either a stabbing or a gun shot or maybe both |

I can't believe this is going on in Everett and people will say it's all over the commonwealth, but, when you think about Everett has made the news more in the last couple of years and it is scary out there. I think the chief needs to replan is 10 hour shifts we need more police on the street and beat walking is where is has to start. |

Is this true? I did not see anything and this rash of violence has got to stop. I have never in my life seen it so bad. There needs to be a plan of attack on combating crime/violence. Lets try and prevent another tragedy. |

There is a Crime Prevention meeting this coming Tuesday - Aug 19th at the police station - 7:00 pm. Perhaps we can all attend and find out what is going on and how we can help. |

That's good to know. Thanks.
My problem is I didn't hear this. I only know from Fedup.
Is this on ECTV or in the papers so everyone can be informed? |
