I think that Best Buy issue makes it to the agenda so often because they can't get it resolved off-camera. It's a tactic that one of my old bosses used to call "Give'em a Headache". It was laid on the table from the last meeting so we knew it was coming.

I didn't list it in my post about the town meeting but the folks that live in that general area are very upset over the Best Buy signage issue dragging on and felt that Ranieri got a bad rap about getting the signs put up. One gentleman stated that he was at a ZBA meeting where Sherri Clancy promised to have those signs put up.

To me, promising to have signs put up and actually getting them put up are two different things. And when in the same week, you get caught trying to push through signs without traffic commission reports and one can't be done without state approval and the other is contradictory to standard policy, take your lumps and move on. After getting a closer look at May and Kelvin Streets in the last couple of weeks, I can't believe that they are not one ways already. Probably a better way to go.

I didn’t see the whole thing but I saw the Wood Waste part. I can’t tell you how sick I felt. The agenda was “when will the Mayor set up an open public hearing” (that he promised in June) Once again, he used that podium to try and make Thibeault out to be a saint. He should have been shut off when he went off topic. But no, they let him go on and on with his BS. He was blowing up at Simonelli for no reason. Simonelli was calm and only asked the question.

He also threatened to take class action out on Newburyport over the landfill issue. Of course he said that means Thibeault too. Like that means a hill of beans. He said something about Newburyport was dumping stuff in there for 100 years and Thibeault had it for one year and they are all playing the blame game.

Blame Thibeault for not following through with his plan “B” per ROSSI. You have to see it. Joe King mentioned that he did not believe Thibeault is the one paying taxes on the Wood Waste property and the Mayor assured him he was incorrect.

The Mayor even said, to Joe King, if you let me know in advance I would have brought that with me. ANYTHING to make Thibeault look good. The most intelligent question was from Millie Cardello concerning the P&S for the old city yards. The entire city council needs to see that and see if there were any changes. I’m not hearing what he plans to do with the city yards. The mayor says it will not be a dump but just wait and see. No one else spoke but I will give the benefit of the doubt for them to speak at a hearing.

The first half or so of the meeting was taken up by item #3. I don't believe much new ground was covered in the discussion. The chief stated that a part of the problem is the city's transient population; I bring this up only because it will be referenced later on in this post. McKinnon did go a little of the issue by bringing up the residency ordinance. He was allowed to do it and I thought that he might be headed somewhere with it but nothing really new there either.

Next up was the the Wood Waste discussion. Tails left out a couple of thing. The mayor gave credit to Mr. Thibeault for re-doing Snake Hill beside the new high school. Also, the DCR has given Thibeault and the city permission to clean up the neglected areas of the rotary as part of the beautification program; that work is scheduled to start on Friday. The mayor did discuss some general plans for the city yards. When papers are passed, Thibeault is going to clean it up and fence it off. Thibeualt is supposedly in discussion with some parties about developing there since he now has access to the parkway (how? where?). If he doesn't find a deal he likes for now, he will fix up what is there now and use it for some light industry until something better comes along. The mayor promised that Thibeault will not let it sit there idle.

Tails will be thrilled that the Best Buy issue will be back in two weeks. Sherri Clancy was taking her son back to college, Julius went home sick and Best Buy didn't send anyone. The highlight of this item was the great umbridge that Ranieri took at people blaming him for the signs that were put up in the Village. He re-stated something that I had posted in the town meeting thread about Best Buy promising to put up those signs at a planning board meeting and a ZBA meeting. He made it clear that his word is his bond. He also stated that he is going to fix the traffic problem in the Village once and for all, even if it costs him his seat. In a later discussion about making May and Kelvin one way streets, Ranieri states that this will get the "transit population" that the chief mentioned earlier off the roads in the Village.

A fairly short but somewhat memorable meeting.

He said he did not put them up, but did he have them put up? He is so arrogant I cannot stand it. He bought a house on a highway and now complains about traffic????? I would not want ot live in his house either, that is why I do not live in the village. I cannot see anyone wanting to live in that congested, industrial area.

Since it's been determined the signs were never approved, why are they still there? It seems rather foolish to complain they don't belong but not remove them.................

I certainly don't disagree with the assessments I've read here of Ranieri. But why, since it's been identified that the signs were put up without authorization, are they still there?

Who's job is it to request their removal?

I tend to agree with Sally; Ranieri didn't put up the signs but, he probably had them put up. Did Sherri Clancy or Best Buy promise these signs at a planning board meeting or ZBA meeting? Wasn't there, don't know for sure, but I have no doubt that the statement was probably made. But would National Development or Best Buy have the temerity to put up the signs on city property without proper approval? I think that Ranieri's own experience that they haven't put up signs on DCR property without permission tend to support that. I also might be more willing to believe Councillor Ranieri if, in the same time frame, he hadn't been caught pushing thru two other pieces for signs that hadn't come from the traffic commission.

The BOA voted last week to take the signs down. The sign division of city services should be taking the signs down. If they are still there, what's the hold up?

Those signs could have been made at any sign store. They are generic signs, not official signs. Dont you think that was a "teeny" admission from Ranieri that he had those signs put up when he said "If it means loosing his council seat that he will make the village safer" I know the village is congested but it was a great place to live at one time. It was a lot of fun and everyone knew everybody. It has rapidly been going downhill the the past five years and it is from absentee landlords and renters coming and going and a couple moves in then a few weeks later more and more people move in ALL with cars and no place to put them. We really need to go after these landlords and who they rent to. The city should look into something to the effect that landlords have to register their tenants with city hall and the city should enforce the check up. You know how they come around and investigate, usually on Thursday nights, with the fire department, to make sure the homes are up to standards......I haven't seen that enforced in years.
