I agree with the public safety employees living in Everett as a requirement. I personally would like to see a residency requirement for more than just public safety, but at least it's a start. I can remember when I was a kid, most of our teachers lived in Everett too. |

I'd like to see preference given to Everett residents but I don't like the idea of limiting the pool to Everett residents. There may get a few who would be willing to move here but, In my opinion, it would only be until they can get on a force elsewhere.
I don't see this requirement as a good move for the city. |

Do Everett residents currently get preference? I ask because if it gives you the edge getting the job then I think your compelled to reside in the City. don't use it to your advantage to get the job and then move out. |

Random thoughts on last night's meeting:
The point of the sign in sheet is to get people who are asked to attend the meetings in and out of there as quickly as possible. I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with councilors and aldermen who take their pieces out of order just to get them on earlier in the meeting. If you noticed, Joe King's objection came after the Best Buy issue was discussed. If you look at the agenda, there was no one requested to appear at last night's meeting on that item; the item only concerned the acceptance of a committee report. The city engineer may have signed in on this item because he attended the public safety meeting on this issue but there was really no need to take that item at that time.
As I posted last week, I have mixed feelings about the residence requirements. I understand both sides of the arguement. My question from last week was somewhat, but not entirely, answered. The impression that I got from last night's meeting is that this item seem to be a negotiable item at contract time. So my question to everyone is do you feel the same about this item if there is a cost to the tax payer associated with it?
Is there any real process at city hall when it comes to drafting and passing ordinances? Last week, the alderman voted favorably on the first of four readings of an ordinance that had never been reviewed by the acting city solicitor (and apparently not the mayor's office either). I can understand Councilor DiFlorio's point on why should the solicitor spend time on an ordinance that they are not sure that is going to be passed. However, it is my understanding that every time a proposed ordinance gets amended, the reading process gets restarted. That is why it is important to get things right the first time.
I didn't have a stop watch on anybody but there had to be lots of people who violated the five minute rule last night. Enforcement of that might help the flow of the meetings.
I know that I'll catch some flack for this, but it is only intended as constructive criticism. Part of the problem with the meetings this year has been the mayor. It something that I noticed from the first meeting of this year but have kept mostly quiet about until now. The mayor tends to try take too much control of the the meeting when he is at podium. He needs to learn to edit himself and keep on point while speaking. He should only be at the meetings to answer questions and concerns. Twice last night during the discussion of item #3, he seemed to interject himself into the meeting without being recognized by the chair, once to help out Mr Burley (which actually was a help) and once to debate with Councilor Miller. If he was recogized by the chair and we couldn't tell because of the camera angle, I apologize and my issue is with the council president. Again, this is only intended as constructive criticism and I hope that the mayor will work on it.
A committee made up of any councilor or alderman who wants to get involved will not solve the problem of getting streets fixed. Fighting over who is responible for an unworkable solution does less. From what Councilor Napolitano said, it sounds like there may have been a less political process in place for street repair in the past. Maybe the city needs to get back to that for a start.
$125,000 to fix the Parlin library stairs?
We had to get help from Tennesse (Vanderbilt University) to put together a "Welcome to Everett" package? I bet those students were impressed last night. |

Do you know why there would be a cost to the taxpayers because of the residency law to the Union? I thought the law was the law and city government were the law makers and everyone else abides by them. That doesn't seem right. The library stairs, they are getting taken to the bank. Do companies have to bid on that work? Well, they better do something quick because this has been going on for over a month and it's going to cost the taxpayers a lot more in a law suit. I agree the Mayor needs to remember these are Council/BOA meetings. He's been in control of every meeting. Mayor DeMaria used to get upset with Joe McGonagle when he spoke from the chair and it's like he's doing the same type of thing now. I felt he was a little defensive with Councilor Miller because she mention The City Solicitor Search. He gets very defensive and jumps up to talk with out being invited up. I always hear the president say to the Councilors/BOA "would like the Mayor" he shouldn't just jump up and answer. He seems like he's working hard and trying so that's a good thing, he just needs to slow down a little and think about it. |

Tails,
Like I said, I'm not 100% certain if we got the answer on whether the residency requirement is a negotiable item. When Alderman Marchese first referred the item to the city solictor for input, I recall that her reply was that it was it could be a contractual issue. This is a case where the mayor should have deferred the question to the city solicitor. I'd really like to know the answer to this one. |

Yes, it does seem to be getting worse. It seems that every meeting there are 2 or 3 members who get up on every subject and mostly make an ??s of themselves. I think most of the council members do try to work hard for the city, but the disruptive one make them all look bad. Also, a lot of the stuff (e.g., resolutions) are items they don't really have any voting power on--just another opportunity for the camera hogs to get on screen. |

They’re becoming more and more of a joke. I can’t take these people seriously anymore. They all try and outdo each other and try and make their colleagues look dumb. I just don’t get it. I’m at the point where the taxpayers can stop paying this unique government and just have The Board of Alderman. It’s sad to say but true. It takes the BOA to straighten them out all the time and these issues can go back and forth from the BOA to the CC then back again...…then it gets lost. What a waste of time.
The one issue I was waiting for was the hiring of the police for the weighing of the overloaded trucks and while I agree with Mr. Napoletano (sp) that the issue was about hiring more police, however, I feel the safety of people comes first and to let this issue just die is wrong. I would keep it on the table until you get results. I travel that way every day and it is unsafe. I understand the bridge is “technically” Boston but these trucks are coming from the Everett Weigh Station and if takes hiring three police officers then they’re going to have to do it. The bridge is in Boston but the problem is in Everett. Mr. Ranieri said the bridge is shaking more and I can attest that it is, especially when you’re stuck in evening traffic (which has worsened coming home lately)....and the two lane bridge has become a four lane. So, for once I agree with him and for Mr. Ranieri to just get shot down like that was wrong.
I think the Teen Center was a great motion by Simonelli. Who really uses that disgusting pool anyway. A teen center that is open year round is what is needed. If they extend the rec center that’s even better. This should be for all ages and with the increased gang activity we should do what ever we can to keep our children off the streets. The pool just doesn't cut it. |

Things are out of control here. I had police with guns drawn in my back yard today. Seems they stopped a man who had a gun and he ran. They never did find him. Thye had the State Police here with dogs, and lots of EPD officers for over an hour. Scary things are happening.

That's awful Sally. It would be nice to come up with a system that would notify the entire city of something like that because I did not hear it.The man could have ran from your yard to mine and maybe if I knew some nut was running around with a gun, I wouldn't go in my yard or let my kids play outside at that time. If this was a teenager boy, then this is a perfect example of why a youth/teen center is needed. Maybe if the teens were in a structured program that would get them off the streets and away from guns. |

Still nothing from our Common Council on the issue of the Veterans Service Office. I thought for a moment there last night that Joe King was bringing it up but it did not happen. |

Joe King did make a comment about someone coming in soon. I don't know if he was referring to the commissioners post. That position is very important and as it stands right now is in violation of the law. The thing that bugs me is the fact that the Mayor had said over and over and in his inauguration speech that himself and his administration would inform everyone of the hirings and firings... and I mean no disrespect to anyone (because I have just an average job) but it's not like an office position. It's a commissioners post... and as for the veteran that was there last night......I thought that was a nice thing, however, it "appeared" like it was to make the Mayor look good to the veterans of the city. The Mayor should be talking about the current status and where they stand on hiring a new commissioner and not posing pretty for the cameras. |

Small correction Tails....I happened to be at city hall on Friday when the veteran came in to present the Mayor with the flag. The Mayor was not in the office at the time. The veteran was asked if he would like to present the flag during the council meeting Monday, an offer he eagerly accepted. It was very much less an effort to make the Mayor look good....and more of an effort to thank this man publicly for his service.
You stand corrected. |
