Is it a paid appointment? Does it come out of the taxpayers pocket? I don't know, just asking. |

Yes, they are paid and this committee grants/denies abatements, etc... There absolutely should not be any family or friends of ANY Mayor on these committees. I don't care how they justify it because you know that's coming. That is unfair to the taxpayers and you could go in front of this board.....and get denied...because of your political status. They will say.....no way....but....yes way....that's the way it will work. Then you will have to go out and get a lawyer and pay 300.00 for an appeal (on top of the lawyer) and still get denied. This is a joke that is not funny and if the board of alderman approve the Mayor's brother for this then they don't ask the right questions and it's their vote that would allow this. |

Tails,
I think you might be confusing your commissions. The mayor wants to appoint his brother to the City Services Commission, not the Board of Assessors. |

If someone is appointed to a paying position isn't that the same thing as being hired? They are collecting a check from the city of Everett so they are working for the city. Right? |

Very possible... but if you go to the City of Everett's website then go to City Services and under City Services you go to online documents click on Commission Committee (under city services) and this is what you get. I still stand by the fact that no family or friends of any Mayor should be on any committee for the city. Not to mention this is exactly what he said he would not do. |

I believe the City Service Commission I spoke of was correct. It is the City Services Commission and people go in front of this commission when you feel you are being billed too much for water. Recently, some were approved and one was denied according to the minutes report. Another question I have is who exactly would he be replacing? The only position I see that "could" be replaced is chairperson. Are they appointing him chairperson? I have a huge problem with that. |

Are you speaking of the "Executive" Director of City Services? If so, yes, I noticed it. It's probably for justification of his salary. You will hear all this at budget time. They must be working on it now for it to be due in May, I would imagine. |

Budget time starts in about a month. At least there will be something to watch on TV. |

Items 2 - 6 Well, at least they're finally addressing the appointments that they've gotten behind on (notice the appointment ending dates). They may be qualified but doesn't it send a message when the first two appointments that you make that have to be approved by the BOA are your campaign manager and your brother? BTW, how many jobs does Bill Hart need? Besides his high paying state job and the board of assessor's job, one of the papers recently noted that he had recently been made the president of the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce.
Items 7-12 The first piece of the elimination the board of fire commissioners is up for final ordainment this week. Let's see what Matewsky does this time. Still no mention of the other ordinances that need to be modified (8.63(b), 8.64 and 2.31(a)(3)(b)) to implement this change cleanly.
Item 24 Does anyone really think that if the city starts taxing the companies for usage of the poles that those taxes won't be directly passed on to the consumer?
Items 26 & 27 Marchese's residency ordinances came out of committee again with unfavorable recommendations. Lets hope that since the full boards seem to have a different opinion that at least the issues associated with them got addressed in committee. Can anybody say televised committee meetings?
Item 30 Isn't the cat already out of the bag on this issue?
Item 33 It'll be interesting to see where this goes.
Item 37 Haven't we been here before? If there is a real interest in doing this, shouldn't an effort to do it been started long before now?
Item 38 Does Marchese really think that he's going to be able to keep the kids out of the park?
Item 40 Isn't the issue really that the state has control over these lights? The issue of the short walk cycle in the square never got addressed.
Item 43 The city really needs to address this issue. I don't think there's a house on my street that hasn't had some work done out in the street and doesn't have a pothole of some type because of it. I believe that water pipe work done on Tappan Street last year, leading up to Hancock Street, left a disgraceful mess. There would probably be a whole lot less need for streets to be redone if this issue were addressed appropriately.
Item 44 It is definitely wrong that the city hasn't budgeted for capital improvements over the years. However, this will be a difficult time to start to do so.

I saw that part and then I was done. I dont even know what happened with the rest of the meeting. I was not a Hanlon supporter this go around but I will tell you.....not one question was asked. When Hanlon was in office this was a huge issue with both the BOA and CC. Thats all they ever said was "he's hiring family and friends and it's not right" (the BOA and CC) If John Hanlon tried to put anyone on any committee with the last name Hanlon.....they would have nailed him to the wall. I don't understand why the same rules are not applying. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander....I always thought.
To boot....Carlo said in his inauguration's speech that "The days of hiring family and friends are over" and this all thats been going on with no questions and everyone just yessing him to death and no one calls him to the floor. I'm surprised they don't bow when he walks in the room. It's sickening that we have bunch of cowards up there making these decisions and for many years I have always respected and admired Chuck DiPerri but he has been disappointing me lately. I know he has the nerve to stand up to any administration but he's lost his nerve and good luck to anyone that supported Joe McGonagle going in front of that committee. If they do and get denied I hope sue for discrimination.

Items 2-6 Tails is right; not a question asked. But to be fair, not many of these types of appointments are ever challenged, especially on the issue of the person being appointed. The only times I ever recall appointments like this being challenged have been when the BOA has been trying to protect someone from losing an appointed position or when the mayor was a lame duck. Although some of us might believe that this was an issue that the BOA needed to take a stand on, I think that they see it more as an issue that the public can evaluate for themselves. Not everything can be a battle. And I'm sure that there may be battles to come.
Item 24 The commonwealth may force the city to collect these taxes. Great. Only Verizon for right now. I guess it might be time to change phone companies. Also, you may need to increase the amount put aside for the tax abatement overlay account in case the ruling that allows this is overturned; thereby increasing the amount that needs to be raised on the tax levy. Just can't win.
Item 25 Boy, the City Council support staff is really struggling this year. Another item that was sent back to the wrong meeting.
Items 26 & 27 Wonder what Matewsky got promised for changing his vote?
Items 33 & 35 I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for someone from the DCR to appear at one of these meetings.
Item 41 Will a committe to decide what streets get done ever get untracked? Tune in next week for part 87 of the continuing saga.
Item 43 The language barrier makes it really painfully to have the city engineer appear at these meetings. I usually come away from these items with more questions than answers.
Item 44 A capital improvement plan after the budget? Even if it is going to be funded by borrowing (I thought that the city couldn't afford to borrow any more money?), don't you need to know how much money needs to set aside to pay for the borrowing, especially if it become a pick and choose improvement plan. Dying to see how this plays out.
Item 45 (Under suspension due to a miscommunication) 42 other states have implemented Jessica's Law and Massachusetts can't or won't let it get out of committee. Just sad. |
