Fund-raiser to benefit slain mom’s daughter By Marie Szaniszlo Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - Boston Herald
Four months after she was murdered by her former boyfriend, a heroic Everett mom will be remembered by more than 100 people gathering tonight to raise money for the daughter whose life she saved.
Many of the 160 people who already have paid $75 each to attend the fund-raiser did not know Altijana “Tina” Moric, but were so moved by her heroism that they have started a college trust fund for her 12-year-old daughter.
“Everyone in the community felt touched by this tragedy,” said Saritin Martinez, a friend of Moric’s who helped organize the event. “Tina was a model citizen, and she loved no one more than her daughter. People felt the least we could do was show that when you come together as a community, you can make a difference. And education is the best gift you can give to a child.”
Moric, 36, fled war-torn Bosnia in the early 1990s only to be murdered Dec. 20 by 44-year-old Edward Pettengill, who then killed himself.
According to police, Pettengill burst into her apartment with a shotgun, wounded Moric’s new boyfriend in the arm and then went to kill her daughter. Moric told her to run and tackled him, giving Nadinah enough time to escape.
Today’s event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Wyndham Hotel, where Moric worked, at 201 Everett Ave. in Chelsea.
Donations also may be made to the Nadinah Moric Irrevocable Trust in care of Mellon Bank, 201 Washington St., Boston, MA 02108.
