When you get a city job because of a mayor, shouldn't you be of a mindset that you probably won't have that job when election time draws near? It ususally doesn't matter if you are great at that job or not. Just me, you are right..2 weeks is standard for most companies, but there are companies that help people by extending benefits if they can..

Please! I do feel bad for these people but our budget is already out of control............ Extending benefits would certainly help them but it will hurt a lot more of us.

In a Corp layoff they don't extend benefits they offer you Cobra but you have to pay for it. But they also give you two weeks per year per years of service so if you were a six year employee you would get 12 weeks plus whatever vacation you have coming but you would have to pay for your medical benefits.

Not all corporations give you those benefits.......Im not aware of any law that requires it either. Corporations pay unemployment insurance to cover layoffs.

Were the employees at city hall terminated or laid-off? There is a big difference in the cost to the city.

I have no idea.....why is there a cost difference? I wasnt aware that the city contributed to the unemployment insurance fund...usually the state does a good job of shielding the public sector from these type of expenses.

All the employees were fired. Denise was told by Erin It was a political move, your position was promised to someone else. Too bad that person who is Stacey DeMaria's friend has no work history to speak of for the past couple of years. Denise took a vast amount of knowledge with her.

Are you saying people who are employed by a city a not entitled to Unemployment compensation? Or are there different laws for a city than a business?

There is a line item in the city budget for unemployment compensation. For FY09, it was budgeted at $400,000. I would assume that it used to pay the contributions to the unemployment funds. If it works like it does in the private world, employers are assessed a percentage of each payroll that they run. The longer that they have been paying into the unemployment fund and the fewer claims they have filed against them, the lower the percentage that they pay is. The percentages are set by the government based upon the employer's past experience. In the private world, a private company in Massachusetts pays both FUTA (Federal Unemployment) and SUTA (State Unemployment).

Denise's replacement started yesterday. I'm told she doesn't even know how to turn on the damn computer!!

Carlo,

What are you doing? It's very nice of you to give your mother's friend a job but what's she going to do next year when you lose the election? I know......... she can manage one of your stores. She'll be as qualified to do that as she is for the job she has now.

I heard the someone from the School Department is in the MIS Department. Carlo must owe Fred something... The school department shouldn't have anything to do with the City Hall systems. This is a case of Fred sticking his nose where it doesn't belong.

I can remember, not too many years ago, when FFF and Carlo didn't like each other at all.

Check this out: 2002 DeMaria's run for Senate. We know better then to elect him then. Still the same clueless look.
