Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAYOR, POLICE AND FIRE, CHIEF TO MEET REGARDING SAFETY
INITIATIVES
In response to recent isolated incidents, Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. called special meetings
with Police Chief Steven Mazzie and Fire Chief David Butler to discuss quality of safety
in the city. “We’ve had some tragic incidents recently, my sympathies and condolences
go out to all the families involved,” stated Mayor DeMaria. “I know our men and women
in Public Safety do the best they can,” adds Mayor DeMaria, “I want my office to help
them do more.” Police Chief Mazzie, discussed some recently publicized incidents, “The
recent spike in violent crimes are not connected to each other and they do not appear to
be random acts. The people of Everett should feel comfortable going about their daily
activities.” The Mayor praised the police department on their quick response and
apprehension of the assailants.
The Mayor is pushing to new deploy new strategies, new technologies, and enhanced
methods of community involvement, “We have to do everything we can to make sure the
community continues to feel safe,” notes Mayor DeMaria, “I’m open to ideas, whether
it’s text messaging tip lines, a stronger presence on the street, officers on bikes, more
community gatherings, tougher fire regulations.”
The Mayor urged both Public Safety heads to continue on their short and long-term
prevention plans. “My plan is to invest in our community, to keep people in Everett,”
states Mayor DeMaria, “initially what my office can do is help by strengthening our
community programs, teen programs, get people involved with their city.”
The Police Chief also pressed for strong community involvement. “We have been
fortunate to have strong partnerships within the community to help prevent and deter
crime over the years,” notes Chief Mazzie. “It is important for individual residents to stay
informed and involved. We need additional eyes and ears to help us apprehend subjects
that engage in behavior that is unacceptable to all those who live in the community.”
The Mayor then recognized the men and women of the fire department who patrol the
industrial area along the Mystic River. “The companies along the Mystic River have Fire
Department details for a reason,” notes Mayor DeMaria, “the city enforces strict
regulations with companies along the river, as with everything, prevention is the key to
keeping the area safe.”
