It was all the same. Things we already knew.

I thought that the first gentleman to speak hit the nail right on the head. We get this story in dribs and drabs. Even when we get something, it not fully explained so that most of us can understand it. Even last night, Mr. Thibeault's attorneys seemed to say things that contradicted each other. Maybe they weren't contradictory but they weren't explained well enough to seem otherwise.

It was disapponting that the DEP and the AG weren't there last night. But I understand that with litigation going on. I wish that the statements the mayor said that had received from them would have been read.

There was at least one new bit of information that came out of it. Mr Thibeault has to build a new temporary facility on the Boston Street site once the piles are removed. But I don't think that we got enough details on that, i.e., why is that any different than what's being done there now?

One thing that I heard last night I found astounding. No one knew that by letting this C & D material decompose in landfills, (or piles for that matter) that it would produce the hydrogen sulfide gas? A chemist couldn't tell you that?

Maybe the turn out wasn't what some people would have liked to have seen but If everybody had tried to sit down, there would not have been enough seats for everyone. At the height of the attendance, there were a few people standing in the halls as well. It did show that there is at least a committed portion of the city population that cares deeply about this issue.

From the ECTV listings in today's Leader-Herald, the meeting is rescheduled to be replayed over the coming week. Since the meeting ran over two hours, the very end of it got cut off on the replay at 10 PM. Maybe that is something that they will be able to address; maybe not. It cut-off in the middle of Councillor Sarnie speaking. I believe the only speaker after that was Councillor Simonelli. Even so, I think every citizen of Everett should make an effort to watch this meeting so that they get some kind of understanding of what the city is up against.

What I don't understand, why is lower Broadway even in play since Mr Thibeault has not even bought that property yet? The main issue is Boston Street. Something needs to be done down there and be done now. Why is the mayor waiting for a trial that could take months? I just don't get it. Why isn't the mayor trying to get some relief for those residents that are directly effected by the nuisance of Wood Waste. The rest of us have concerns but these residents have to deal with the fallout on a daily basis. Can our Board of Health do anything for these folks?

I remember Mr Rossi stating that Wood Waste would begin trucking the debris out as early as last June. If that process had begun as Mr Rossi had stated, Wood Waste would have been 4 months into removing those piles. I am sure we would have seen a decrease in those piles by now. Now, Mr Rossi is telling us that it is not feasible to truck the crap out of here. What is the difference between today and last June?

This is just another example of why the residents do not trust Wood Waste!

One other thing, Mr Rossi had the nerve to call Mr Thibeault the victim in all this. I thought I was going to choke.

Not that there weren't problems before but I believe that Mr. Rossi's statement about trucking the piles out in June and the failure for it to happen have pushed this conflict to a much higher level. No one coerced Mr. Rossi into making that statement; he offered it up on this own. This came at around the same time as the Mayor stated that he was going to try to reform Mr. Thibeault into a good corporate citizen. The lack of follow-up on the trucking issue, which has now turned into an outright refusal to do so, has given the administration, Rossi and Thibeault huge black eyes and has destroyed the possibility for the citizens of the city to have any trust in this issue. Mr. Rossi stated last night that he might be the most hated person in Everett. He's probably right; but, whose fault is that?

I thought that meeting was for the residents to talk. What BS. The Newburyport people were the ones that gave the most effort, besides a few people. Also, they let the lawyers speak way too long.

What I do not understand is, it has been mentioned before that Thibeault was fixing spurs on a rail road track.....lower Broadway, I "think"

How could he have been allowed to do that if he doesn't own the land??

I also think the lawyers spoke way too much. The Mayor is too close to the people involved in this whole situation and is getting himself deeper and deeper into conflict of interest issues by opening his mouth. Judging from the way he speaks about the people involved the eviro lawyer name was Richard the Mayor called him "chip" several times. The owners name is william thibeult the mayor calls him "bill" and the other lawyer is atty rossi is his childhood friend from St. Anthony's. The Mayor is knee deep in this and between him and the owner and the lawyers this mess may never get resolved. From what I have researched on H2s this can be very dangerous. This is going to end up like the WR Grace Co vs. City of Woburn people got sick... died years later and the WR Grace said everything was fine, there were no health risks and this was back in the 70's. People are still sueing this company and people are still suffering from the health risks caused by this company. The true risk to our community from Wood Waste may not be realized until years from now.

It would be great if someone with a DVD recorder could record the rebroadcast of the meeting and send it to Newburyport. If the Health Director gets it, he could pass it around. (City of Newburyport, Director of Public Health, City Hall, Newburyport, Ma 01950)

Those of us from Newburyport appreciate your allowing us to participate in your community meeting last night. We felt it was important to know what you are dealing with as well as for you to know what we are dealing with. It's very obvious that it's the same monster in both cities.
Please don't let up on Mr Thibeault, that is what he counts on. He will persist because he knows he'll be making $$$ while we all suffer health effects and loss of our property values.
Attorney Chip Nylen, has been representing Thibeault against Newburyport for atleast 7 years and 90% of what came out of his mouth last night was false or twisted. He feels the Host Community Agreement (HCA) will be thrown out by the court. I doubt it, it is a legal and binding contract, ordered by DEP and is referenced in the 2003 Administrative Consent Order (ACO).
Everett's Board of Health has the right to issue a Cease & Desist under MGL. Chap. 111 "Noisome Trade" due to odors and dust being emitted into the neighborhood. The problem is that the Mayor must completely support the Health Director's actions. He should put the resident's health and welfare ahead of monetary gains from a business.
Do you have an ad-hoc committee or a neighborhood committee that is looking into the health effects or can pressure the administrations (City, DEP, Governor's office, etc) to look into the health effects?
We have done lots of research and would be happy to share anything you might need.
Woodwaste paying for a health study??? Don't accept it.
Good luck!

Was it ever determined why Mr. Thibeault and the Mayor both left the chambers, and they raised voices? Did Mr. Thibeault think this meeting was to show how great he is?

After Newburyport City Councilor Jones addressed the Everett City Council regarding the way Mr. Thibeault conducted his business in Newburyport, the Mayor asked him to step out into the hall. The Mayor asked if there were a way to work things out between the cities. At that point Mr Thibeault showed up and told Jones that he only gave one side of the story. Thibeault told Jones that the City dumped sludge at the landfill and he has a letter stating the City's responsibility. Jones told him that the letter was from a past Mayor giving permission to dump the sludge but it was not proven that it was ever actually dumped there. Thibeault claims it is there and Jones told him to prove it by showing where and how much. He said that Thibeault would have to remove all the fill he's brought in if he wanted Newburyport to remove it, if it's really there. Thibeault said he would do borings to prove it and Jones stated "good, that's what you were supposed to do years ago"! Thibealt obviously thought he could intimidate Jones, as he has others, but it didn't work.

I'm not sure what Mayor DeMaria was trying to get at by "working things out between the cities" with Councilor Jones.

Plus, why do borings now? Shouldn't he have done that when he first purchased the landfill? He wants to make life hell for people in Newburyport for retaliation. That's all that is. All these people that are advocating this man really needs to go and live right next to Wood Waste or Crow lane landfill for a week and see how they like it. Unfortunately, for the ones that have suffered for years, we don't know the long term effects.

What really bothers me about this whole thing is there are other landfills and transfer stations out there that follow state regulations and have no troubles. All this just reaffirms my position with Mr. Thibeault.

I don't believe there is a problem between the two cities. The problem is between Thibeault and Everett and Thibeault and Newburyport. Why is the mayor even trying to put his nose in Newburyport's business. I am sure Newburyport's elected officials are well aware of how to handle their own problems.

So, who was doing the yelling out in the corridor that we could hear inside the council chamber? Mayor DeMaria? Mr Thibeault? Councilor Jones?

I wasn't there but I was told it was the mayor and Thibeault and that Thibeault motioned to the mayor to go out to the hall. The mayor got up in the middle of the meeting went to the hall and the yelling began. It kind of makes it obvious who is calling the shots. Thibeault has enough power over the mayor to make him leave a meeting with the people. Pretty sad.
