Topix is not gonzo. It looks like their servers were upgrading. I can get on the site. Even if it was "gonzo" .... it really doesn't matter. One goes down, another goes up.
Haven't seen the alderman's meeting yet but sounds like they proposed more cuts. I think that's a good thing. During the budget hearings there was not any support from most of the common council to cut the budget. They should pass it with the alderman's recommendations. I'm sure those recommendations are not life altering.
I cant understand how the budget hearings went with all the increases in it, and little to no questions. Maybe it's because the new charter is in effect and most on the common council are just moving the problems down the road. As elected officials..........they should know better!
The problems with the budget is a reflection of elected officials who refuse to do their job (look at the voting record) and who the ones who put their personal agendas first. They are not doing their jobs! How many of us would keep our jobs if we boldly and publicly refused to do them? The system is broken because of the morons who have been elected -- and is putting many people at risk of losing their homes. Remember how to vote next election for the ones who decide to pull papers and run for the new board. I wont vote for any that refuse to cut the fat out of the budget and will make sure many others wont either. |

Update, I am now able to get into Topix. |

I agree, it can take a while for maintenance. I just tried and got this message:

I have no idea what goes on with Topix. All I know is it's a raunchy non-moderated site. And, I've always questioned if they can legally charge $19.99 to have raunchy posts removed. |

Well, since there's actually an agenda available this week and it at least looks like there are some fairly interesting items on it, why not?
1. Will they actually revoke this license? It's about time.
5./7./17. Anyone know how much has been donated towards this project or remember how much the Mayor said he could raise for it?
23./24. Any guesses what will happen with these license renewals? If they don't get renewed, will the BOA (minus one member) get sued too?
29./30. No quorum? The ones that don't show up when they're supposed to (especially the habitual ones) just make the rest of them look bad.
31./36. Since the mayor didn't veto the residency ordinance (it was published in the ELH this week), will they let him off the hook from appearing? Will the amendment to the residency ordinance make it through the CC this time?
33. Hopefully, the BOA will handle this piece better than the CC handled their corresponding piece.
34. Is this carnival the real reason that the July 4th festivities are being held on June 23rd or is it something else?
35. How can they change the ordinances when no one is really sure which charter is in effect?
37. I guess I wasn't the only that feels there was something wrong with the way that the CC handled its votes on the budget.
38. Historic districts in Everett? Really? |

My guesstimate on what’s in the beatification fund, can be anywhere between 70-100K. The memorial fountain…. where we can all sit to reflect (and also have all those names of financial donators engraved in this fountain to look at) …..the low end cost according to Mellissa was 150K. I do not believe those funds are in beatification, so not sure why production has already started.
Would love to hear how additional funds will be raised and how all the flowers and rotaries are also paid for (and continue to be paid for)…through beautification. Something does not add up there.
There is something suspect ( not carnival) about moving the 4th of July festivities to June 23rd. I wonder if yet another vacation is in the works for that time.
The budget…what budget? Why have rules if you don’t follow them? If that passes even with the fiasco the common council made of it…it’s just more proof the system does not work. Do away with all the ordinances and all the rules because there’s ways around all of them. I hope things get done correctly. |

Tails,
The beautification fund is separate from the 911 Memorial fund; but that's a good question too.
In the beginning, there seemed to be a good amount of money going into beautification fund; but I don't recall very much going in there lately though. I think that it's been around for the better part of four years and, depending on how much money they've spent from it each year (which we have no clue about), you have to at least wonder how it continues function. Certainly, I'd doubt that it would contain any excess funds that could be used by the 911 Memorial project if that comes up short. |

I could have sworn it was stated that the donations to the beautification fund was paying for this. Isn't that why we had the Mrs. DeMaria in front of the CC?
Well, this concerns me even more. I wonder how the beautification fund can continue with all these donations going to the 911 fund. There cant be much (if anything) left in beautification, with the work on the rotaries, islands and all the flower pots that went up over the weekend.
I'm not against beautification, I just think certain things are over-kill (and over-paid for) particularly, Sweetster Circle. |

I wonder how long it will take the AG's office to get back to the BOA. It appears tonight was not one of the City Solicitors best performances. I believe even most lay people could understand her opinion was flawed. |

Wow!
I expected at least some of the aldermen to "respectful disagree" with the city solicitor opinion if she came down on the side of the common council acting correctly on the budget last week. But I thought that the most likely scenario would be that even though they disagreed with her opinion, they would accept it and go ahead and act on the budget as amended by the CC last week. So, I'm kinda shocked.
I'm pretty sure that we can all predict how the AG's office will most likely come down on this; they will defer to the opinion of the city solicitor. So I'm not sure what the aldermen expected to gain from this move. Can they take up the budget piece up at their next meeting since they ignored it tonight? Or did they also do what they accussed the CC of, i.e., kill the budget and the $250K+ in cuts that they probably could have agreed upon?
I guess we didn't get rid of the bicameral government soon enough.
And Tails, if you review the agendas/and or meetings reports, I think that you will see that there are separate donations accounts for the Beautification and 911 Memorial. Mrs. DeMaria is just involved with more than one project. I know she's involved with Shute Library project too. |

I actually applaud the BOA for abiding by their rules. At this point, the $250K would not make much of a difference in the overall scheme of things. The CC should of had no further discussion on the budget once reconsideration failed. The rules are the rules and I believe the City Solicitor was mistaken in her opinion. I think any of us who watch these meetings on a regular basis knew the CC had made a major gaff.
I, for one , am glad that the state will be made aware of the flawed process, even if the AG defers to the City Solicitor's opinion. The next step will be to see if the State will accept the budget, since it was obtained through a flawed process.
In my opinion, the BOA would have been remiss in their duties if they hadn't taken the action they did at last nights meeting. The CC needs to learn there are consequences to their unprofessional actions.
I hope when the 2013 elections are upon us, the voters will remember which members voted against the taxpayers and for the administration. |

What's right is right and the alderman took a stand. They dont have to listen to the solicitor when they know shes wrong. They did the right thing. send the tape and the notes and make the mayor submit another budget and do it right this time. Time to stop just accepting things because the mayor says so.
