Quit trying to downplay it Mike, to run for an elected position all you have to do is be a registered voter. To become a registered voter all you have to do is sign a statement saying that you are a citizen. If she were nominated I would hope the School Department and the Alderman would act in Everetts best interest and ask to see proof of citizenship. On the other hand let them nominate her, all it would take is one phone call to homeland security, and her and any strings attached to her would be investigated under the Patriot Act. I would enjoy watching the spin that the School Committee and Alderman would put on that embarrassment.

I agree, I don't think you need to show proof of residency to register. However, they do send a census out every year to the address you give them and if you don't send it back, your name is subject to removal from the voter rolls. I wonder if they regularly remove names though... I always return my census and I also remember that on the form it said that any resident listed as a noncitizen must bring in proof of citizenship to change that N to a Y. Therefore, I'm sure the reason my wife had to do it was for the census, not for registering per se. She happened to do the registration at the same time and I got them confused.

Clearly though, it is a rule that you must be 18 and registered to vote in that district to run for county, state, or national elections according to the state website.
You must be logged in to see this link.

However, I wasn't able to find anything specific about city offices for Everett and I assume they are the same as for all others above. The City Clerk's office provides access to the city charter/bylaws which would detail these requirements. The city website has the municipal ordinances but for eligibility requirements for candidates for office were not listed there.

There is a new form to fill out to register to vote where you do have to show identification to show proof of residency -- like a driver's license. Now . . . in order to get a driver's license, don't you have to show a birth certificate or have a social security number. It's been quite a few years since I got my license, so I don't know what the process is now.

But . . . you do now have to show proof of residency to register to vote.

Good information!

I think others may be able to say more about this than me, but I know that since 9/11 there was legislation to put tighter restrictions on getting any state ID to cut back on undocumented immigrants getting one. I renewed mine online last year, so I don't know what its like at the Registry since the laws took effect.

Excellent points as to how to shake up the school committee: Suggestion for Joe Giuliano for his first couple of meetings. 1.)Study the audit and than question specifics of the audit and ask the school commitee why they never brought up how a bid was submitted in the name of a company in 2002 had been out of business since 1998 or 1999. 2)Also ask them how the $180,000 in legal fees that was paid to an attorney who now conveniently has no electronic record or backup paper records of the supposed services rendered, and why they took this explanation as gospel/ 3) The school committe is supposed to be an idependent body if this is the case than why does Freddy Bulger run the meetings and control the gavel, i dont see David Ragucci running the Aldermen or Council meetings. And last question each and every member who has family on the school department payroll and ask them to explain how they can be independent when 5 out of the 9 of them have direct conflicts of interest.

Well, one question would be to John Hanlon, will he show up at the school committe meetings? He won't have a vote, but he has a seat, thanks to Ragucci. Will he then show what his thoughts are on Fred? Will he ask any questions pertaining to the audit? I don't think so..He will probably mumble something about how he needs time to starighten out City hall. You know, "hiring the right people", oops, he put a freeze on hiring, didn't he?

What I thought was interesting was Hanlon saying in today's paper that he has a way to send out quarterly tax bills in two mailings. What is that, the new math?

In another article he said he's going to give people the option of paying in two or four installments. That's a whole lotta trackin'. Are people going to have to decide at the beginning of the cycle whether they'll pay in two or four installments? For those who choose to pay in four installments -- are there going to be reminder notices sent out. That's still four mailings. That's more man hours tracking who paid when.

It's going to be interesting to hear the details of this and other plans that the Mayor-elect has, given that he's putting a freeze on new hiring. Very interesting indeed.

Justthfcts: You make some very good points, but please don't forget that this city re-elected David Ela, who was chairman during that audit. How did this city, if it really cares about education and cleaning up the school department - ever reelect Ela?

There is definely something wrong with most of the voters in this city. Not to take appropriate action with the school committee, relecting members who have to protect their own relatives who have jobs with the school system......

We've all heard these complaints before, but it is still infuriating.

I heard that the only ad that John Tumblin put in the paper was in the papers that were stolen. Wasn't that convienient for Ela. Most people left blanks instead of voting for change..Ela should be thanking his lucky stars he won..and not by much...

I still think it's depressing that people would vote for Ela. This guy has aggressively supported Fred at every turn. Anaconda, while coming in third despite the master's degree in public administration, is still in office and still plugging for his uncertified teacher-wife. Lester, God bless him, will still carry Fred's water until he retires to Marblehead. People had the opportunity to vote for change....and they still voted for incumbents. What's it going to take? The perp walk?

I am ashamed to admit that before the election, I didn't have time to check ont he school committee candidates. I had to pick one incumbant as I thought I should vote for three and I think I may have voted for Ela. It wasn't until after that I got around to researching and finding out he was the CHAIRMAN. Geez, I hate to admit it but I was part of the problem there. I'll know better next time and hopefully the education I am getting here will stick :)

Michael- no worries. I greatly believe in the concept of "what goes around- comes around." Mr. Ela will have to face the music, along with the others, when Fred finally goes to justice.

Emile - I know Ela's wife is a nurse at the Whidden, and he's been a coach in town for years, so perhaps it's just a case of a guy who has let personal relationships with people override his common sense and business sense?

Thanks Court, that must be the case.

Strange guy Ela, I see him now and then during the year and say hello and the SOB actually ignores me in a very rude way.

The ONLY time the Pompous SOB will acknowledge me is when he's running for reelection.

Jerk.
