I don't think so. They only get the 45 days to do their piece of it, but then, if I understand it correctly, the budget still has to be submitted and certified by the state, which may explain the three month window.

This whole process has been so confusing. You hear so many different stories. Okay, let's see if I got this straight. They have 45 days from the day the budget was submitted to the city council to pass it. If the 45 days goes past June 30th, they go into a 1/12th budget, but the city council still has to pass the budget within the 45 days. The 1/12th budget can go forward for 3 months or until the regular budget is certified by the state. Do I have it correctly? |

That's my understanding. Anyone else have a different take on the process? |

Has this ever happened elsewhere in the state? This is the first time I have ever heard about it. |

I think Court had said that Lawrence had to do a 1/12th budget this year. |

Evidently the mayor will be presenting a 1/12th budget at a special meeting with the CC and BOA on Friday. There will also be another budget meeting Monday night. |

The meeting on Monday night, will it be the budget committee or the BOA or the CC? |

From what I understand, the Mayor is going to present a 1/12 budget for the month of July and BOA and CC have to vote on that Friday night. The budget committee will meet on Monday night for the fy08 budget and the separate boards will meet on Tuesday for approvals - CC first with the BOA following. If a new budget cannot be agreed on, hanlon's original budget will go into effect on the 15th. YIKES! |

Thanks for the info. I hopr the CC and BOA look at the budget again and cut it even deeper. |

I can't imagine that they will allow the original budget to stand. And if they did, the state could never certify it, because it exceeds the tax levy. The budget, as it stands, requires an override.
Thanks for the info, Fedup. |

Sorry, my previous post was incorrect. The mayor will present his 1/12th budget based on FY07 to both the BOA and CC on Friday. Monday night the CC will vote on the budget as submitted by the BOA. Tuesday night the BOA will approve the CC's vote from Monday night. So, who is on first base now? It doesn't appear that the entire budget committee will meet as a whole again. I hope I haven't confused you further. |

I wish the budget committee was meeting as a whole, again. The cuts that they have decided on do not go far enough. We are still going to get hit with a large tax increase. |

If they had a mind to,(not that they have a mind) could the city council revisit the school department's budget and make some cuts? I don't expect them to do that, just wondering if it could be done. |

My understanding of the school department's budget is that unless they meet net school spending (which they haven't), the money that the City allocates, cannot be touched. City Government cannot tell the school department how to spend its' money. |
