It's a rare man who can admit when he's wrong. Thank you for participating in this discussion. Very few of your comrades have ventured out here and have been so forthright. |

Thank you clarifying Councilman. I too was under the impression that the School Committee was getting paid now and got the retro pay also. Glad to see it didn't happen that way and sounds like they have to get relected to get paid. |

Thank you Councilor Mangan. I'm afraid I didn't understand what you were saying. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I noticed on the agenda for the Aldermen's meeting on Monday night that Stat Smith is going after FFF again. As bad as FFF is, I wish the effort would be put forth to go after this administration. Ask the mayor to step down - give him a vote of no confidence and fire janice vetrano. The morale at City Hall is at an all time low. The clerical staff is waiting for the shoe to drop - rumors are flying about who is going and who will remain. Supposedly, letters will be handed out tomorrow with bumping rights on Monday. However, who really knows. Positions that were cut from the budget, will not be cut and the union workers will go. Quote of the day by Dave Rav - "I would give up my job so a union worker wouldn't be let go". Is he for real? I don't think so. Whether these layoffs take place or not, hanlon is playing with people's lives and should not be allowed to finish his term. |

From what I understood they all agreed not to take the medical, but they are entitled to it.

EverettsPride, they are not entitled to it. The ordinance stated specifically that health insurance would not be offered to them. Before this ordinance was finalized, I spoke with an attorney for the State of Massachusetts who specializes in Mass State Law, and she advised me that we had the right to exclude health insurance. Anyone who gets elected to the School Committee in the future certainly has the right to challenge this ordinance though. It's just that they would have to do it at their own expense. |

He did it!! That SOB that sits in the corner office has authorized the auditor to fund all departments the amount of his original budget less about 96K that was originally cut. He sites the city charter stating the BOA & CC were in violation because they met & voted on the same day. The CC voted @ approximately 1:45 a.m. on 7/13 & the BOA met & voted @ 7:00 p.m. on 7/13. |

Sorry, the date the cc & boa met on the same day was 6/29, not 7/13.
This guy is carrying so much brass I don't know how he can even walk! |

Could you clarify this a little? I am confused. You mean to say that Hanlon is going to go with his original budget because he believes the votes happened illegally?

According to this morning's Independent, the mayor believes that a number of provisions of the city charter were violated by the City Council during the budget process. These included the BOA and the CC voting on the same day, not allowing department heads to speak during the budget processing, cutting funding for contractual obligations and the City Council getting involved in employment issues by cutting salary line items.
There was also an allegation that MGL was violated during the budget process because proper quorums weren't maintained during the budget votes. The way that the Independent tried to explain this was very confusing so the following is only my interpretation of what I thought they were trying to say. I believe that issue is that during the meetings of the Council of the Whole, there may have been times when the individual bodies did not have a majority of their members present. I may be wrong but that is what I got out of it. I not sure what else it could be. I watched every budget cutting vote of the individual bodies and I just can't remember a time when a quorum was in doubt.
It was reported that the mayor met with the DOR on Monday to get their opinion on this course of action. It was reported that the DOR declined to get involved as they felt that it was a local matter. Does anyone know if the City Charter is available anywhere on line? The city web site only appears to have the revised ordinances portion of it available online. I'd like to look at the other portions of it before I comment on this issue much more. All I'll say for now is that I am sickened, but not surprised, by this latest turn of events. |

Keanu, You need to stop drinking that kool aid! Ragucci has nothing to do with what's going on. hanlon is sticking to everyone of us and you're taking it with a smile? If you want to talk about dumb people, go look in the mirror!
The budget process was a disaster from day one. I think everyone made mistakes however, I also think hanlon should have co-operated instead of throwing stumbling blocks at the CC & BOA every step of the way. Additionally, if we had a city solicitor with a brain, he should have provided the necessary guidance to the CC & BOA. Instead, we're stuck with a budget that's going to stretch every taxpayer to the limit and we've got a poster here who seems to think that's just fine!
It was so much easier a hundred years ago............... A lynching would have taken care of the problem months ago! |

Keanu, do you live in the real world? Do you work somewhere where your job is guaranteed? In this day and age, that's not the way things work. Is it troubling when people lose jobs? You bet . . . especially in this case when you have an administration that submitted a bloated, irresponsible and quite possibly illegal budget.
And justme, the lynching comment seems extreme, but what this whole experience does show is that this city is in desperate need of a recall ordinance.
