Obvious, I disagree. Have you seen the backlog of tickets to be input? Mr Kelly was looking for help long before night enforcement came on the scene.

| Nope. I believe he's referring to Sally............ However, he blows smoke all the time so I wouldn't count on him knowing much of anything. |

Are we back to that again? It does not matter who people are, what matters is the content of discussion. Mr. Mangan, are any new hires being let go or is it only union people? Why not start at the last hired, first fired? |

EverettsPride, the reason I sponsored this piece was to promote competition. Two years ago, a lot of people complained about the School Committee not having any serious opponents. I was hoping that this would bring more people out to run for School Committee. This is what I would of told you over the phone. I have nothing to hide. |

why couldn't the budget be cut by getting rid of some of the elected officials positions ?? Do we really need all of those people in the city gov. trying to run the city ? Apparently it is not working anyway. I don't know if it would save a significant amount of $$, but at least it is a start.

| Councilor Mangan, trying to generate interest and more competition is all well and good but why pay them retroactively? In fact, why weren't you interested in having them become paid positions effective with the next group? The group that may have participated because of the salary? |

Keanu, Are you referring to me as Ms. Gover? Thanks for the compliment, but I am not Kathy Gover.

| I happen to think that Mr. Mangan has grown in the job as a city councilor. While I don't think the school committee should be paid (why pay for incompetence?) I think he did a good job working on the budget cuts. And Sally - I respectfully disagree with you regarding Mr. Mangan's votes on the budget. Every vote counts, and a few of them were close. Give credit where credit is due. |

| And Keanu? As one of the moderators of this site, I have to warn you about the "name" thing. Please desist. |

justme, the School Committe came into the Finance Committee with their wish list. Everyone on that committee voted for their original proposal. It was discussed again at a Council meeting at which time we sent it back to committee to be worked on again. Some of their requests conflicted with the state statues. In the final committee meeting, a compromise was reached, and it passed with flying colors. I am not afraid to say that I made some mistakes during this process. The fact that health insurance was not offered to them was the main reason that I supported this salary. Health insurance has risen over five million dollars in this city in the past three years. |

| Councilor Mangan......... Thank you for the response however you didn't answer the question. I didn't ask how it happened, I asked why, if you voted for it in hopes of generating competition, you chose to pay retroactively rather than wait and pay them effective with the next term? |

justme, I agreed at the time to pay them retroactively because it was coming out of the school's budget. Looking back at it, this is were I made a mistake. I believe the Budget Committee in the end did the right thing though. |

Where the money was coming from isn't the issue and you're still not answering the question. I'll ask one more time, for the last time.............
If you voted for it in hopes of generating competition, why did you choose to pay retroactively rather than wait and pay them effective with the next term?

justme, as I stated earlier, I made a mistake here. If I had to do it all over again, I would handle it a little different. I call it learning from your mistakes. In the end though, the School Committee will be paid starting January of 08. There is no retro pay, or health benefits. |
