Finally the Board of Alderman let their opinion be known on Wood Waste. DiPerri, Matewsky, Marchese and VanCampen are against it. Of course Marcus, Nuzzo and Sachetta voted in favor of it. Marcus gets up speaks against Wood Waste and then votes in favor of the piece. Simonelli needs to beat him. The vote went the right way tonight. |

In case anybody missed it (I didn't know about it), there was a joint convention at 6 PM to talk about the Boys and Girls Club coming to Everett. Right now, it is only a one year commitment, utilizing the field house. It was stated that the Rec Center will stay as is, at least for now. The other rumored use for the Rec Center was mentioned but not discussed. Lots of questions, but not a lot of time was allocated to the meeting because there was a license committee meeting scheduled for 6:30 PM. The item got referred to the Public Service Committee for further discussion.
1. Since I read that there was no audio for this item (I was tied up with something else earlier and these comments are mostly from watching the replay), I made a call to someone who was at the meeting tonight to find out what happened on this item. None of the licensees have contacted the city or showed up at the meeting so the process to revoke their licenses will begin.
4. I wish that information like we heard tonight on this item was more widely available in the city.
6. Personally, I wished that this item had passed; the mayor's going to go ahead with it anyways. At least let a consent order be drafted. If you're against the order on its own merits, that's fine. Not being certain what's going to be in it, I not sure how I feel about it. But, to be against this and not to offer any other solution just smacks of politics. That does nothing to help the public health issue. Seemed to be a very tense meeting tonight. Another shining moment in Everett politics.
8. Maybe a paper work snafu? Or something more shady?
10. Well, Joe; at least it's not dead yet.
11. Do I see a lawsuit in this? Where's my Magic 8 Ball?
13. Can't wait to see Marcus' resolution next meeting.
14. So, Barry Doyle wants his job back. Too bad the salary for that position was eliminated in the last budget. So, how soon will he be back?
15. How can you not be for this memorial especially if it won't cost the city any money to develop it? The city needs to keep its promises. |

I'll have to listen more about the Boys & Girls Club. Of course I like the idea, but you have a scheduled meeting with contractors the next day after you propose this, knowing, they are interested in a housing development, and a parking garage (which is badly needed in the area) something doesn't seem right. Couldn't they go in the Rec Center or the Adams School, since development ideas are already in the works?
Again, I'm not dead set against it, I just feel it needs to be looked into more and the finances of keeping the field house running.
As far as ECTV goes, I did see a message on channel 16 that they are upgrading and that's why there have been so many interruptions and cutoffs? Well.......what about the lousy audio? Is that problem the upgrading too? Didn't the city council take the entire summer off for upgrades. I don't believe that to be the true problem. It's real funny that once Scott was let go, all these problems started.
That Wood Waste agenda (using Alderman Marchese's words) Is the BIGGEST CON to put on the city of Everett. No way those piles will be out in 60 days.....they need to get real. 60 days will be "another 60 then another 60" and on and on and on.
If Billy Thibeault was "truly sincere" he would have made "some" effort already, he has not done JACK.
If the Mayor was "truly sincere" a cease and desist order would be part of that agreement. It's not, and never will be. That's because this "plan' is a favor. We are not dumb. For the Mayor, it's campaign favor thank you's.
As for the councilors and the Alderman (Nuzzo, who needs to really control his temper) all they are doing is giving the Mayor a blank check. The way it was represented was wrong....DID the councilors and the Alderman know about about the November 5th Non-Compliance order??
The Mayor did the right thing about being honest about that before it got out. Those things are public information.
Cease & Desist is the only option for Wood Waste. We have foul odors, Health issues, breaking of environmental laws!!
Finally.........I do not believe for ONE SECOND that the reason Newburyport attended the meeting was because they want to be released from any harm.....or as the mayor stated "They dumped sludge for 60 years" and that they would re-open the landfill IF Thibeault released them from that!! But the most insulting statement was that NEWBURYPORT was USING EVERETT with all the information they provided to us. We would not know anything if it was not THANKS to Newburyport. What an embarrassment to the city of Everett and if they let one ounce of that crap on lower Broadway, it will NEVER leave and........... that resolution failed because it was a piss poor one!

The Adams school is too tiny....my understanding is that the fieldhouse at the old HS has to be used for the youth of the city....it was a stipulation in the donation of the property (I may have that wrong....just something I heard). Who was meeting with contractors the next day tails?
Something else that was mentioned in the Joint Convention (and briefy by Alderman Nuzzo) was that the city was able to secure the $500,000 grant they were looking for to do work at the stadium (new turf). I think both of these items were sent to committee as a result of the jc.

Sorry......the meeting is Wednesday. Billy Cardello made mention of it in the beginning that the Mayor was meeting with him and contractors, that were interested in the garage.
I like the field house for a Boys & Girls Club, and I like the idea it's donated and state money but I would like to see the entire financial report. You know it will be some "minimal" cost to the city.....which I don't have a problem with but I hate hearing things in drips and drabs. If your going to present this, present the whole shebang, not rush something (knowing perfectly well there will be loads of questions) in on a very busy night.
On the other hand with the field house, it's not what the residents in the area want, and their needs should play into consideration as well. |

I've heard the stories too about the donation of the land being tied to that use but I've never found any firm evidence. That doesn't mean I don't think it is true; it's just that I can't prove it one way or another.
On the other hand, the mayor did verify last night that, as a part of the new high school vote, a promise was made to keep the field house for the youth of the city. However, it sounds like nothing was put in place so that the city would have to live up to that agreement. |

I was looking around You Tube and came across a video of Mayor DeMaria speaking at last nights Board of Alderman's meeting.
I don't think Newburyport is going to be happy.

On a serious note I thought that was an awful thing to say about people that so graciously took that trip to help us, and inform us, of a lot of issues that were kept from us. |

I posted a few months ago about that liability for dumping the town may have done years ago was an issue between WW and Newburyport. It's been part of every settlement offer that they have discussed. Why is it wrong to point that out?
You should all be upset that the BoA voted against this resolution. Ugly politics by that group of 4. Why would they not get behind an enforcement order now? When the actual enforcement order gets before them (if its required to be before them) they are going to vote for it anyway. Although, no matter how rigid the enforcement order is I have a feeling the group will want some change made. The city is going from having taken no action to get those piles moved.....to putting together an enforment order....how can you possibly not want to take a step that puts a date on getting those piles removed???? I haven't seen one agenda item for either the BoA or CC that directs the Mayor to proceed with a specific action against WW....specifically, neither the BoA or CC has requested that the Mayor directs his Solicitors Office to put a cease and desist order together for WW. There is a reason for that....they all know that it won't work. A cease and desist may be successful in shutting him down but it won't do a thing to move the piles. He'll lock the gates and leave it there until Newburyport is finally resolved...including all the appeals. All of this talk about Carter Street railroads and moving of piles from one site to another is nothing but a smoke screen. Carter Street has a rail line, not a rail spur....you need the spur to park the trains while you load them. The railroad drops the cars off...leaves them a few days and comes to pick them back up. You can't leave a string of rail cars on Carter Street or Second Street for a few days, traffic might get a little backed up in the area. As far as a pile being down on lower Broadway, I would guess that the enforcement order would prohibit that from happening. Covered containers traveling through the back roads to lower broadway....not disrupting the traffic on lower broadway....with stiff penalties for violations.
Anyway...sounds like good news on the horizon for the youth of our city. A Boys and Girls Club combined with the After School Program, Rec Center activities and various youth organizations give the kids a wide variety of options to keep them out of trouble. |

Why would they get behind any enforcement order on any issue without knowing the exact wording? I believe that would be foolish and they would not be doing the job they were elected to do. When any enforcement order goes before the city council and any member would like to see changes in the order, why would that be wrong?
I am not debating this specific enforcement order. I am just talking in general.
I agree, it sounds like good news for the youth in our city. |

The Boys and Girls Club is good news, I just hope that they are able to keep it going past the first year. The year gives the city some time to sort some things out. But if it is determined the field house has to go, I'm not sure where else they could put it. I'd hate to see the program go thru stops and starts; it wouldn't allow it to build much positive momentum. |

I thought it was known in November what the rate is going to be? Someone should invite Mr. Keverian up to see how we are doing. |
