I'm having a really hard time sorting out most of the things that I saw last night but let me try to throw some thoughts out anyways.
Item #1 Now that I think about it, I don't ever recall an Executive Director of City Services being brought before the Board for approval before, even though it is required by the city charter. Kudos to the mayor for that. On the other hand, the mayor needs to let Mr. Zaniboni speak for himself; now that he has been approved, I hope that it happens. The mayor also needs to develop a thicker skin. I'm not sure where DiPerri was headed with his line of questioning but he does have the right to ask questions. The only thing that I could come up with was that the portions of the resume that were being read seemed kind of "padded" (i.e., driving materials to a job site does not really constitute public works project experience). In addition to a job description, maybe all of these appointed positions needed to have desired qualifications as well. The word "re-elected" came up too many times in this discussion. I would have preferred to have seen this appointment defended on actual qualifications that Mr. Zaniboni has and the job that he has done so far, which certainly seems to be an improvement on what we have seen in the recent past.
Item 13 I'm not sure how I feel about I feel about this item. It would be nice if more of the public safety personnel lived in the city but I'm not sure you should try to legislate a return to "the way that things used to be". My question is if this item ultimately passes and the unions refuse to accept it, where does that leave the city? Is the city passing another ordinance that it can't enforce or would the unions be forced to accept it? Anybody have any insight on this issue?
Item 24 I'm sorry. I just don't think that this is the time for the city to be in the real estate speculation business. If the city happened to come into control of some properties due to non-payment of taxes and worked with someone experienced in the real estate field to fix them up and re-sell them, that would be different.
Item 25 I was very surprised at how low key the discussion of this item was. I'm not sure if there's more to come or if the board has just resigned itself to the fact that no matter what anybody does, this business just does what it wants to.
Item 26 (Next G Lawsuit)
Looks like I was wrong about this one. I thought Next G would hold off until the results of the public hearing were known before considering this. I think that going forward with the public hearing process is right thing for the city to do as it shows good faith. As to how it turns out, I think I'll pass on making a prediction on the outcome since I did so well last time. It'll be interesting to watch though. One interesting side note of this item was the hiring of an outside law firm to handle this case for the city. Under Hanlon, a third lawyer was added to the solicitor's office so that the practice of hiring outside firms could be stopped except in cases that required a special expertise. Does this move signal that adding a third lawyer to the department is not imminent or something else?
One general comment. Why don't the people who sponsor pieces that get referred to committee show up at those committee meetings? Just another reason why committee meetings need to be televised. |

Tetris, once again, thank you for the information. Would you know if there is any way of finding out how many antennas are all over the city? There are cell/wireless on top of so many buildings and schools that's its not funny. We simply do not know how much radiation they are putting out and the harm that can be done. I think we need a total on what we have already for antennas, how much does surrunding cities and towns have, and of course the health aspects of it. Before you know it, we are all going to be micro fried. I've stated this before but who the heck is NEXT G and who are they to make demands to a city that they don't live in and threaten law suits. Someone needs to do something. It's too much. It's too easy to sue and get away with it. |

Tails,
I believe that it would be very difficult to find out how many cell/wireless antennas there are all over the city. For the most part, I would think that they are on private property and there is no requirement that I know of to license them. I'd be curious to know if the are any on city buildings; no one ever asks that question. I don't think that there are any on the public school buildings after the Sprint mess at the Lafayette School but I never did hear how (or if) that case ended. Whatever Next G is doing is different because they want to put them on poles that are on city property. |

It ended but, from what I understand the towers are still up there just not hooked up, or so they say. |

The cell towers were removed from that site last year. Their is an ordinance now in effect that prohibits cell towers being installed on any school building in Everett. The contracts were voided and the school committee ended up with egg on their face. They had put a bid in at pity hall for all schools to get the towers when Jack Garron was in charge, but then they pulled those papers after hearing how people didn't want them on schools.
The antennaes that Next G wants to install are more like repeaters I believe, much like how a wifi router in your homes work.

I would think that it is more likely that Next G's client is the company's whose web site is found at the following link:

I didn't surprise me that the Next G petition passed by a close vote. It was almost seemed like it was "pre-ordained" to be that way. |

I don't think it's next g, my husband's company got the bid for a charter school and the work has been going on since this fiasco with Next G, I don't know how the company Next G could still of been doing the work without the approval of the board of aldermen which they got last nite. I will say its the new charter school and next g is going a little further down the road. I only wish more alderman were against the Next G, the presentation was awful last nite. Still so many more questions but, I can understand Law Suits and the city would of losta and it would cost taxpayers more money.. |

Charm,
No dispute on what's getting built down on lower Broadway because I had no idea what was going on there (although its is a crummy location for a school in my opinion). My post was in reference to your prior post that I thought was trying to identify Next G's client. Sorry for the vagueness of my post. |
