Has anyone seen a sander? My street looks like a sheet of glass. I called and they said they are working on them. |

Scoop, that's nothing new . . . every mayor since the beginning of time had demanded command performances from employees . . . |

Exactly . . . command performances from employees, free tickets to the seniors, and a smattering of legitimate supporters . . . |

The conditions are no better. I am afraid to drive, are the roads horrible?

I must be driving in a different city, because I didn't find the roads all that bad. I had to be out quite late last night, and coming home the mains roads were pretty clear. The side streets are a bit tricky, but I think that has as much to do with the fact that people throw the stuff back out into the street as it does with the job that the city did cleaning them.
Believe me, I'm more likely to look for things that the administration is doing wrong than I am to give them credit for doing something right, but my experience, at least, is that they did a fairly decent job. The problem now is going to be "black ice" forming, so that's something to be careful about. |

Sidewalk conditions are horrible. At least the streets seem clear (that is if you call clear only about a 8 ft wide path up the middle.
I walked my kid to the Parlin today (mainly because I did not want to lose my parking spot near the highschool that I shoveled & chipped ice around the other night).
They shoveled out 20 feet from the front door. Forget about the rest of the 40 feet or so leading to the street sidewalk, and the street sidewalk itself. My worst fear is someone sliding under a car from the unshoveled sidewalks and getting hurt.
This was only about 3 inches of a northeaster that everybody knew about for days coming. The city was spared the expense of a huge storm, they can't be pinching pennies this tight at the cost of everyone's safety, can they?

I just drove my kids to school and I almost was hit twice. As I got to the elementary I was amazed to see the sidewalk were not even clear. They had all day yesterday to throw down sand and salt. The guidance counselor was outside helping kids over the ice covered sidewalk. When a kid or parent falls and splits their head open do you think they will sand and salt? I also saw a city worker in a city truck delivering buckets of sand to his own house. Nice perk huh? They cannot take care of the schools but their own houses are taken care of.

Ah . . . I agree, the sidewalks are a disaster. The schools are responsible for cleaning off the sidewalks in front of the schools, I believe; the city usually clears out the sidewalks on Broadway, but . . . from what you folks are saying, that didn't happen? Beyond that, individuals are responsible for clearing their own sidewalks. I'll be honest, mine is still iced up -- other than the rock salt we've been using -- because when the snow turned to sleet Wednesday night, everything froze over. We've chipped away at it slowing, but that is one tough job!
But for the sidewalks in front of the school not to be cleared, or at least well sanded -- there's no excuse for that! |
