4. + 5. It seems that things are progressing very slowly down at the old City Yards. Even though the real estate transaction was listed in one of the Everett papers, I’ve never seen it recorded on the Registry of Deeds website. I guess these items serve as some sort of confirmation that the deal is still going ahead though. Seems like The Mayor was able to get Restaurant Depot to pony up for nice donations to two of his pet projects.
9. From the little bit of information that I have been able to gather, it seems as if there is at least one faction on the Charter Review Commission pushing to have their regular meeting on Monday nights, overlapping, at least, with the City Council meetings. The justification for that? City Hall is already open on Monday nights and they would not have to pay for a janitor to close up the place as they would if the meetings were held some other night. Since they currently have limited funding, I see some validity to that argument. Hopefully though, something else could be worked out, not just for the politicians but for those of who would like to follow and be current on both the City Council and Charter Review Commission meetings.
On that front though, I’m hearing that the commission is going to make it hard for those of us that wish to follow their meetings. The current feeling on the committee is that none of their regular meetings will be televised or even taped. The one exception will be any public hearings that they may hold. I heard that their meeting last Monday night did get taped because the City Clerk asked before the meeting began if anyone objected to the swearing in of the committee being recorded. ECTV continued to record the meeting but they didn’t take a vote until the end of the meeting to decide not to air their regular meetings. The feeling on the committee is that if people are interested, they’ll show for the meetings. So much for transparency.
13. I’m still not sure why a health club needs to be open 24 hours a day.
14. As I said last time, I’m really not sure what it buys the city to waive the interest on these tickets. Don’t parking tickets have to cleared-up before you can renew your registration? And those people who don’t want to pay code enforcement tickets just take them to court.
15. It was interesting that the School Department came out so strongly against Alderman Marchese’s pre-school piece but not against this one. I guess as long as the School Department can say that they’re not the ones imposing the fees, they’d be good with it. I’m sure that they’d be looking for their share of the pie though. All that said, I really can’t see this piece going anywhere; I’m sure there would be plenty of opposition. Stranger things have happened though.
16. I guess this probably would be a good thing but I’d like to hear more about it. It doesn’t seem like the city should have to get involved in private sector health care with all that goes on that the state level and, possibly soon, the national level. But I’m not against it if it serves a purpose and it doesn’t cost the city any money.
17. It appears that the lighting has been improved at the Corey Street end of the parking lot and that Everett’s version of the “Berlin Wall” has come down to be replaced by speed bumps in the spring. It’ll be interesting to hear what else they have to say though. I know that I’ve nearly been hit by a car a couple of times walking by the Corey Street exit of the lot.
18. A really good item. I think that most communities get periodic updates on their financial status. I’ll be interested to see what kind of information that the administration makes available to us.
21. Again, another good item, especially as it relates to recycling items since they have monetary value under the city’s recycling program. It’s certainly a “rock-and a hard place” item though.
22. I certainly agree with this item but I’d like to know exactly what the issues with the libraries’ certifications may be. |

1. I just don’t understand why there is any question about revoking a license when the business in question doesn’t live up to the requirements of its license. I did learn something tonight though about the requirements of a Second Class Motor Dealer's License though.
9. I think that the Charter Review Commission will come to regret their decision not to televise their meetings; but that’s just me. I heard that their first meeting would have to be seen to be “appreciated”. If they fear that future meetings will go the same way, perhaps that is why they would prefer them not to be readily accessible to the public.
13. I wonder what went on at the License Committee meeting that got this piece referred to the next meeting?
14. What the hell happened with this piece? First, there’s no written response from the mayor as requested. Next, the assistant city solicitor has some sort of a response from the mayor. Then the mayor appears and has some knowledge on the subject because he tried to introduce it when he was on the board. So why couldn’t he supply a written response as requested? So now the scope of this has broadened and there is even a smaller window to try to get this addressed before the end of the year. “Working with…” should be a two-way street.
15. Alderman Marchese really isn’t having a very good month. Now he can’t remember that he has tried to do the something similar before and got shot down.
18. Mr. DeCoste had the data and the projections needed to discuss the piece adequately. But the result of what he said was essentially to expect more of the same; tax to the levy limit and rely on free cash to fill holes. I really would have preferred to have heard that from the mayor though. The mayor did add to this discussion later on in the evening when he spoke about the some of the initiatives that the State legislature is holding up while he was speaking on the library piece.
I thought that it was interesting that some school department questions got slipped in here. Why couldn’t these questions be asked of the superintendent a couple of weeks ago?
21. I don’t think that this piece accomplished much of anything in addressing the trash picker issue. I can’t say that I’m surprised. And why are some pieces allowed to stray from the subject matter and others not, especially without getting the permission of the board president first?
22. I’ve written in the past about how I feel it would be a mistake for the city to fund its share of the School Department budget at less than the state mandated amount; the same goes for the libraries in my opinion. And Alderman Van Campen got it exactly right; if you have a problem with the requirement, take it up with State government. You may not get the answer that you want but no one else can address the issue for you.
Are awning permits really an appropriate use of an “item under suspension”? And speaking of “appropriate”, do awning permits really need to have approval of the Board of Aldermen? I’ll have to do some research. If traffic and handicapped parking issues can be delegated to other boards, why shouldn’t awnings? |

Question, could the $50,000.00 donation from Restaurant Depot been used for the library funding? Seems like that would have been better use for the money if it could have been earmarked for that instead of #35,000.00 for the Beautification program and the $15,000.00 for the Girls and Boys Club. Just a thought.

Although we continue to record all meetings the Board of Alderman Members are not interested in confronting the Mayor on his illegal activities or talking about serious issues.
We have emailed every member of the Board of Aldermen that has email with proof of all our claims and not ONE will bring it to the floor for discussion. |

So, if they have proof and have sent it to the BOA, they should post their proof on their web site so we can all see it. I would think it would also force the BOA's hand to do something, if true.

If they actually have proof, why don't they just put it out there for all to see? There's plenty of accusation coming from that site but that seems to be all they're willing (able?) to give. |

I heard from someone I know in Malden that their city put a complaint in over the sidewalks on Wyllis Ave. I knew that was Malden and Brian Zaniboni really did not make sense with what he was saying.
I think he was being untruthful to Lorrie Bruno. Did that job go to bid, and what company got it? |

Seems like the meeting is likely to be a another yawner; but who knows.
10. I was kind of surprised that anyone on the Common Council voted against this legally mandated appropriation to the Charter Commission. I guess I shouldn't have been. I doubt that anyone on the BOA will vote against it though.
25. Good to see that this piece went to the BOA first as it is required by the city ordinances instead of the CC which met first after the public hearing. I understand the need to develop this land and the need for this particular piece so that they can subdivide the property. However, the existing Air Force Road is going to be the only access to these parcels. Have you ever been down there? The existing portion of Air Force Road is barely adequate access to the businesses that are already in the area. There needs to be another way into that area, if only on a emergency basis. The people in that area of the city may not like that but I think that it's a necessary evil.
26./27./28./29. I don't know what to say about these items other than I wonder if anything will really come out of any of them.
30. Why does Alderman Marcus have Hall Ave on the agenda so often? I wonder what this particular piece is about?
31. I agree that there should be a no U-turn sign at that location and it's ridiculous that it takes the DCR so long to reply to such a simple request. But in reality, will a sign really stop the U-turns from occurring?
34. Here's an idea Alderman Marcus. Why don't you call them and ask? |

Tetris,on #25 are you talking about having access to Air Force Road from Tremont St like it was when the GE was in business down there? |

I think that there needs to be some other access to the area, even it is only used in emergency situations. At one point, there was some talking of building a bridge across the river or something that tied into Route 16; but, if you watched the public hearing, it didn't sound (as best as you could make out) that any of that is likely to happen in the near term, if at all. |

8. + 9. So the state auditor ruled back in September that the state must pay for the special elections. The primary has come and gone and the state still hasn't committed to the funding. How typical! I think it falls into the category of I'll believe it when I see it. God knows where they'll come up with the money though.
10. It doesn't sound like the Charter Commission is going to get a blank check from the City Council. The commission would do well to come with a budget proposal soon and plan their proposed expenses wisely.
11. A good point was made that there is already some extra money available in the City Services Salary line item due to the Water Superintendent position being vacant for at least eight weeks. Why transfer more money than you'll need? Yes, it can be transferred out at any time and will ultimately it will come back if it is not spent. I just don't see the need to start off with more than you need.
26. You want permission to stay open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and you can't be bothered to show up to a meeting? The right thing was done by voting this down.
27. Seems like the Mayor didn't know as much about this as he claimed that he did last meeting or at least he didn't explain it the same way as it was explained last night. Also, it shouldn't be so hard for the administration to get their numbers to jive between departments. Not a lot of praise for the Board either. You'd think that a resolution had never been changed to an order before. All that said, I'm not at all sure that the program will have much success. When it's pretty much acknowledged that the city can't collect on these tickets even when they go to court, what's going to motivate anybody to pay them?
28. I don't see the issue of the Norwood Street Municipal Parking Lot going away any time soon. Sounds like the new Glendale Square.
29. We've heard from the Chief in the past on what his feeling are about doing something about the trash pickers; I doubt that it has changed.
30. Hall Ave. was on the list of streets that water work was supposed to be completed on this year. I wonder what really happened there? I believe that this was being done with grant money. Doesn't that have to be spent in a certain time frame?
35. Only one more Matewsky meeting to go. He still doesn't get it after all this time. BTW, there probably is a difference between a curb cut and a handicap ramp, Alderman. Better make that phone call. |
